The Proud Boys are a hate group. Last night, according to reports and videos, approximately 30 members of the hate group attacked several people outside an event in New York City. This is not surprising. (h/t @letsgomathias) thinkprogress.org/civility-lovin…
The Proud Boys have a history of inciting violence and violent rhetoric. In 2017, founder Gavin McInnes said: "I cannot recommend violence enough. It’s a really effective way to solve problems."

McInnes denies any connection between his group + the far right, dismissing the fact that they show up to the same events, take fashion cues from each other, read the same books + sympathize with each other’s viewpoints — including, at times, antisemitism. splcenter.org/hatewatch/2017…

In January, 17 Florida counties signed Basic Ordering Agreements, which compensate local sheriffs for their collaboration with ICE. Our lawsuit is the first to challenge a Florida sheriff for unlawfully detaining people at ICE’s request as part of a BOA. splcenter.org/news/2018/12/0…

According to Gavin McInnes' account of founding the Proud Boys, America constituted an exclusive "Nation of Clubs" before feminists like Gloria Steinem disrupted the hierarchy where society assumed that white culture, militant jingoism, and restrictive gender roles were the norm.
McInnes purposely makes the distinction btw. cultural superiority and racial superiority ambiguous; here he euphemistically calls white supremacists like Richard Spencer and Jared Taylor "western chauvinists" and "nationalists". He refers to the Proud Boys under the same terms.
When America was a "Nation of Clubs", men's organizations like "The Know Nothings" existed, which McInnes favorably mentions. "The Know Nothings" brutalized immigrants and lobbied for immigrant bans and quotas.
