11/23/48 from 8 to 9 pm on WCBS' "Film Theatre of the Air.'' CBS network's Tuesday night programming ran from 7:30 to 8 and from 9 to 10 pm at this point, so a local hour was devoted to a 1938 western wherein Tex avenges his mother's murder. NY TV debut 7/28/48 on WATV.
11/23/53 at 11:30 pm on WCBS' "The Late Show.'' "A JAMBOREE OF LAUGHS AND LOVE...when a spicy red-head teaches a smart-alec reporter the ropes!'' promises an ad for 1944 Republic comedy. Has Paramount restored this one?
NY TV debut 11/23/58 from 5 to 6:30 pm on WNTA. Temple's Fox vehicles, spread among several stations, were often broadcast in New York City on Sunday afternoons.
11/23/63 at 11:20 pm on WCBS' "The Late Show.'' Scheduled NY TV debut of Olivier's 1957 comedy was postponed until after JFK's funeral. All 7 of NYC's VHF stations pre-empted entertainment programming, save a Giants game that WCBS licensed to WNEW due to contractual obligations.
NY TV debut 11/23/68 at 11:30 pm on WABC's "The Best of Broadway.'' Rights issues probably culprit for relatively late arrival of Fox's 1953 Berlin musical that skipped a network run for syndication via Seven Arts directly to local stations.
11/23/73 at 10 am on WPIX. An Olympic swimmer like Johnny Weissmuller, Buster beat out boxer Max Baer Sr. to land his first film lead in Paramount's 1933 highly entertaining answer to TARZAN, THE APE MAN (MGM, 1932), sadly out of circulation for decades.
11/23/78 at midnight on WOR. Sadly missing from @FilmLinc's exemplary Robert Siodmak retrospective, even with Richard Brooks collaborating on exotic 1944 fantasy. "One of the world's worst and don't miss it,'' blurbed @nytimesarts' inimitable Howard Thompson.
11/23/83 at 3 am on WOR. Channel 9 was the last syndicated stop in NYC for many well-traveled Fox titles before they migrated to cable. Kazan's neorealist 1947 thriller made NY TV debut 5/6/57 on WATV's "All-Star Movie'' with later NTA-licensed runs on WNEW, WNBC and WPIX.
11/23/88 at 2:20 am on "TNT Overnight.'' Wong plays a crime-solving astrologer in delightful 1938 mystery, one of several Warner B's that seemed to float potential series. Would make a great double feature with THE ADVENTURES OF JANE ARDEN (1939), @WarnerArchive!
11/23/93 at 4 pm on TNT. You don't often see a trade ad labeling western remake (1941) by a director making feature debut a "masterpiece," but MGM had to do something to distinguish it from PRC's "Billy the Kid'' series, which eventually ran to 42 titles between 1940 and 1946.
11/23/98 at 10 pm on TCM's "Feature Presentation with Robert Osborne.'' Star of the Month Claude Rains welcomes Scotty Beckett (who will grow up to be Robert Cummings) to the saddest birthday party ever committed to celluloid in Sam Woods' jaw-dropping KING'S ROW (1941).
"King's Row'' was adapted into a limited TV series that alternated with "Casablanca'' and "Cheyenne'' on "Warner Bros. Presents'' (1955-56) with Jack Kelly, Nan Leslie, Robert Horton and Victor Jory (as Dr. Tower) with guest stars like Natalie Wood and Dennis Hopper.
Some episodes of "King's Row'' appear to have been released as theatrical features in the UK, possibly with added footage as they ran only 48 minutes before the addition of WB promotional material. Future professor was guest star on series premiere which aired 9/13/55 on ABC.
