For those interested in psychology, one big takeaway from Social Psych is we think we are independent, largely immune to influence. Asch,Milgram & Stanford Prison are just three quick examples of how humans will do things they know are wrong.1/5
Conformity:Asch taught us people would agree with obviously wrong answers about the length of lines when those around them consistently gave the wrong answer. We don’t like to buck the crowd. Others can make us do things we know are wrong. 2/5
Obedience:Milgram showed most decent people would give dangerous levels of electric shock to others when instructed to obey an authority figure. 3/5
Power of situation/conformity/obedience: Sanford Prison showed when given authority in the right situation previously law abiding & decent people have the potential to do evil things to others.Learned helplessness sets in for some of the oppressed. 4/5
Invariably students think”Well I wouldn’t have done that...”but the reality is people are significantly influenced by others&rarely decide on free will&independent thought alone.Groups&people in power can create dangerous situations.Powerful people with platforms especially. 5/5
