Great question from @mademarest about how change comes to Trump supporters. I have a few thoughts from a psychological perspective. As we have all experienced,it’s very difficult to engage them due to strong confirmation bias, cognitive dissonance defense, limited sources of info.
My hope is they see his betrayal on issues like military, corruption, tax fairness & patriotism. His not donating on 9/11,not going to Arlington on Vetern’s Day, not spending VA$ & not going to church expose his lack of credibility on those issues.
We know Trump doesn’t care about them,in fact looks down on them. I am 100% certain change in them won’t be due to liberals trying to educate or teach them with confrontation & facts. It won’t work. Their defenses are too high, trust too low.
They see *you* as the one who needs to learn. Clinically the techniques that work with defensive clients with strong denial systems like Motivational Interviewing are likely to have the best chance for success.
The practitioner doesn’t come across as a confrontational expert teaching the client. Rather guides the conversation drawing attention through reflection & focusing questions on the content that leads to change. Avoiding direct confrontation.
You basically allow them to walk a path, with you shining a light,to a point where (based on their own words, not yours) they see change as necessary. Obviously you can’t learn it through twitter. You can try the approach though. Note subtlety -Example here:
Once you expose the areas where they doubt him & are disappointed or worried you ask follow up questions in a genuine way about *those* areas. Guiding the conversation with your questions. Reflecting back the points you want amplified, ignoring the ones you don’t.
The conversation is deftly directed by you in a way that allows them to spend more time exploring & discussing his deficits. Direct confrontation will lead to them digging in and shutting down so must be avoided.
Big picture-wise candidates should focus on the issues important to his base and how frankly Trump is a fraud on *those* issues. We know he’s not devout. We know he looks down on the little guy and exploits them. Amplify the stories of his failures to honor vets over the years.
Amplify stories of him screwing small business people, tenants & trades people. Unmask him for who he is basically. There’s no need to lie - just don’t fall into talking (to them)about stuff that won’t resonate with them like immigration, race,BLM,Flag. Win on *their* field.
Motivational Interviewing skills are great in many facets of life too. They work when many other approaches fail because they don’t let the subject see you as a threat to their belief system. Lots of decent stuff on web/YouTube to build skills.
