Okay, folks, a short thread on dealing with diabetes (Type 2)

1. I am not offering medical advice, just sharing my experience that has enabled me be diabetes free for months on end.
2. You need to seek medical advice from a diabetologist/endocrinologist. They will run some tests to know what kind of diabetes they are dealing with and whether there are other issues like high BP or cholesterol
3. For me, from the beginning my doctors were clear that I should be off medication in a few months from diagnosis. I was diagnosed in an emergency situation where I collapsed and spent a few days in ICU, HDU and general ward
4. I was on a cocktail of medication, including insulin. Now, my specialist doctors gave me a roadmap that I was to follow if I wanted to be diabetes free. and here it is -
5. I had to stop taking alcohol completely. Last I took alcohol was 17th December 2017. I had to stop taking any sugary or fizzy drinks, sodas, juices etc. Haven't had those since December 2017
6. I had to change my diet to a plant based diet. For the first five months after diagnosis I did not eat any red meat. I mostly ate different kinds of beans, veggies, ndegu, mushrooms etc. Also I avoided dairy products and any wheat products. Not eating chapo is hard aki...

9. I test myself for blood sugar levels daily, just to ensure they are still within normal levels
10. with the above regime I was able to do away with insulin injections and other medicines within three months. I have not had any high blood sugar reading since January 2018, not even one.
11. Sounds easy but it has been a struggle. Also, support system counts big time. People around me have been supportive and never seek to 'derail me' from my regime
12. Now many doctors will tell someone that they have to be on diabetes medication for life. Mine told me to work towards no mediation within three months. I think that made the whole difference.
13. I read a lot about the condition. My biggest motivation is never to be in an ICU bed again because of the same...
