When you consider the rampant voter suppression and gerrymandering at work to stop this, you must celebrate. Many forces tried to make sure this didn’t happen. But it did. Everything won’t be won tonight. But if you can’t see the light in this darkness, you really aren’t looking.
Democrats flipped the house w/ historic wins by women + people of color, some slashing decades-long red strongholds. And 1.4 million formerly incarcerated people have regained the right to vote. Despite gerrymandering + suppression. Something powerful has happened. Believe that.
Newsflash: Texas and Florida are no longer red strongholds. The final numbers being THAT close after the gerrymandering + voter suppression? Republicans won by the skin of their teeth. They know the tide is turning. Now if only Dems knew. A lot has been gained, folks. A lot.

Both reaching for our bags in the overhead he said: “I’m not usually this guy, but please keep doing what you do. We need to hear voices like yours. And I need to listen.” I could feel his heart. Grappling with the moment in his own skin. We spoke for a bit and then deplaned.
The second person was Latina. I’m walking through the terminal. She was young. Early 20s. She just walked right in front of me. And stopped. With tears in her eyes. All I could do was hug her and try to hold in my own. She just whispered thank you. I thanked her too. We parted.

Going on a little rant about F. Gary Gray. If the industry was at all fair, he’d be a household name. But it ain’t, so he ain’t. I remember a conversation with a bunch of Academy members who don’t look like us. Had no idea who he was. He was only admitted to the Academy in 2015.
A director is fortunate if they make one film that folks remember beyond the year it’s made. Gary has multiple classics. As in more than one. More than two. More than three! And he’s broken a major industry threshold in the process.

So here are a few takeaways from yesterday. Some caveats. First while I'm talking about voting and electoral politics I understand it's necessary not sufficient. Second I also understand that the Democratic Party isn't the end all be all--in fact it's the opposite in many ways.
Third, I know that we've got less than twenty years to get this right (see: climate change report), so I get time is of the essence. Four, I'm not about hope and change. I am about winning though.
1. We won. I mean that literally--we took 25 seats they wanted. We got rid of gerrymandering in Michigan. We ended felon disenfranchisement in Florida. We took back at least two states (NY, Maine). We put two Muslim women in Congress AND two Native American women.

Vast majority of citizens who voted today voted Democratic. 7-8 pp more people will only translate into 20 or so more seats in the house. Once again Republicans will hold the senate with a minority of voters. And, of course, President Trump lost pop vote too.
Senate map was really hard: Democrats entered tonight with just 23 seats to Republican 42. Note that 6 seats we counted as safe were in tough states from 2016: OH, PA, WI, MI, MN, MN. And, we still have MT, AZ, and NV to finish counting. 46 or 47 is not ideal, but OK considering.
Democratic house ran into gerrymandering wall and could not get over. Looks like Democrats will take just 3 seats that were not in my 33 toss-up races. Despite 7+ pp victory they won where expected (which, fyi, were a bunch of Republican held districts).

hotels usually send a free pick up in the form of a tuk-tuk, with whom you can arrange a deal directly for sight seeing. they make a living and are much cheaper than cabs. slower easier happier more sustainable way of travel
