I am a #FloridaMan and try to focus on my state’s issues but we all need to be talking about #Portland and and the state of democracy in America right now.

🧵 1/n
A few weeks ago I received an anonymous postcard from #Portland addressed to “crucial voters” with *hand-drawn* art and county-specific instructions to #VoteByMail.

Busy in the ICU and ER, I probably would have missed the deadline otherwise.

2/n
So I got my ballot, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the postcard, the attention to detail, the distance from Oregon to Florida, and what that effort says about our #ElectoralCollege system that gives my vote more weight and how fundamentally undemocratic that is.

Trump claims there’s massive fraud with mail-in voting. That's simply not true. You are five times more likely to be killed by lightning than impersonate another voter and cast a fraudulent ballot. It just doesn’t happen. gregpalast.com/trump-could-be…
#VoteByMail #ElectionFraud
Trump's fraudulent claims of mass mail-in vote fraud may have a very serious end game. In the event that Trump fails to win the Electoral College, Republicans could use the hysteria they’ve whipped up about vote-by-mail fraud to steal the presidency. gregpalast.com/trump-could-be…
The GOP-controlled Legislatures could claim that mail-in ballots are fraudulent and thereby refuse to certify a Democratic win in states such as Wisconsin and Georgia.

THREAD: @JoeBiden & The #ElectoralCollege: There are 2 basic factors of electability nearly every major Democrat candidate in 2020 could reach: 1. Win the national popular vote and 2. Win back Michigan, Wisconsin & Pennsylvania. The easiest & barest levels of electability. But...
2/Suppose we are overestimating the #Resistance to Donald Trump in 2020? Suppose just one of the key 3 states in 2016 put Trump over the top in 2020? Which candidate could get to 270 electoral votes a different way? Who is best positioned to win in Florida? In Arizona? In North..
3/Carolina? In Ohio? It's those bigger thresholds that make @JoeBiden the best positioned to beat Trump. Two groups give Biden a unique electoral advantage. First, an incredible strength among older voters. Of the top 10 oldest states as of 2018, 3 are crucial swing states:

When did we become a country ruled by executive order? Why do so many Governors, Mayors, etc. feel empowered to make unilateral decisions? At a minimum, there needs to be some sort of cooperative action b/w legis & exec branches b4 Americans are told they may not go to work. /2
Legislative debate wd allow more info to come to light re: pros/cons of lockdowns. Some think they work. Others say numbers flawed; virus not so lethal. Some think 2nd wave cd be worse if we protect low risk people now. /3

They misunderstand how #ElectoralCollege functions. We don't hold a single nat'l election for President on Election Day. We hold 51 elections: Each state/D.C. holds a purely democratic, statewide election to determine wch electors will represent state. /1 washingtontimes.com/news/2020/feb/…
This is a purely democratic, statewide election for an elected official (the electors), just like an election for Governor. "One person, one vote" is respected at the state level. Another way to think of this.... /2
The question has never been: Will we have democracy vs. no democracy. The question has always been: Will we have democracy standing alone (nat'l pop vote) or democracy + federalism (state-by-state action -- the #ElectoralCollege) /3

Nat'l Popular Vote might be sorry it ever dreamt up its interstate compact. So many creative ideas that states can use to muddle national popular vote tally--or even to swing tally in favor of its preferred candidate. Some ideas here: dailysignal.com/2020/01/14/new… #ElectoralCollege /1
But the ideas don't stop there. Here are more: (1) Yesterday, someone on my FB page suggested: Give every voter TWO votes. Most voters will cast two ballots for same candidate, but not everyone will. Complicates efforts to tally vote. Also inflates vote total from that state. /2
(2) New idea: What if e/ voter had 3 votes & cast those votes for individual electors, directly? Give voters 2 chances to vote for at-large electors, representing state. Then 1 vote for elector to represent cong district. Good luck, #NPVIC, getting nat'l pop vote tally from THAT /3

In 2008 I watched #RonPaul cheated out of winning the #RNC National Convention. #WeThePeople watched the #PartyElite change the rules, on the floor, and #RigTheVote.

We organized and cleaned out establishment #OldGuard #Republicans, voted them out, volunteered, participated
In 2016 I watched #FeelTheBern supporters lied to - their votes rigged by @HillaryClinton @DWStweets and thrown away. Many of them obediently fell in line, shut up, and voted for one of the most corrupt politicians of the modern era.
With @realDonaldTrump we have a reformist:
* gutted the #GOP
* appointed over 170 federal judges and counting
* placed 5 #FederalReserve Governors and promoted Powell to Chairman ( Think #Restructure ) - thus controlling it
* Killed a Globalist #NewWorldOrder Trade Deal #TPP

[Thread] Since Trump has officially been #Impeached there are several things that need to happen immediatly:
1. Since he is no longer President The White House & @Twitter should remove @realDonaldTrump access to the @POTUS Twitter account.
2.Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) should be sworn is as President since she rightfully won the 2016 election. She can choose her VP.

3. Trump needs to be charged and arrested for his crimes. #LockHimUp

#Impeached #impeachment
4. President Hillary Clinton(@HillaryClinton) should reverse every Executive order and bill Trump approved while in office

5. 2020 elections should be put on hold and Hillary Clinton gets to serve 2 Terms..

6. The next elections should be held in 2024.

1/ Remember when you first heard about the concept of the Electoral College? (Me at 10 years old: "What? Wait? You mean the person with the most votes *doesn't* win?!")

We must abolish the Electoral College & ...

#ElectoralCollege #NationalPopularVote #AbolishElectoralCollege
2/ ... in the interim pass State Laws, such that whichever candidate receives a majority of the popular vote, or a plurality of the popular vote (less than 50 percent but more than any other candidate), takes all of the state's Electoral votes.

3/ Not that the US is a Democracy, we're not (interrupt any politician who says so), we're a Constitutional Republic. But the Electoral College pushes us even further away from a Democracy. This is the wrong direction. We need to move *closer* to a true Democracy.

If you have lived your whole life as a voter in the US thinking we have one person = one vote, like some folks in my mentions, then in your world @HillaryClinton has been POTUS for 3years and this Trumpian hellscape doesn't exist. But in reality there is the #ElectoralCollege.
1/
I posted a response to @ewarren taking on the #ElectoralCollege which has cheated two Democrats of the presidency in my lifetime when they won the popular vote. Throughout the rational world, this was/is viewed as a gobsmackingly bad system--because it is. Some are now upset.
2/
I want the person who won the most votes to be POTUS. Like #WeThePeople intended. The #ElectoralCollege was meant to prop up and protect slaveowners. It should have been abolished with slavery. You should know this. If not, read up.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Wow. Look at this. There are a lot of important points about the anti-#ElectoralCollege National Popular Vote Plan in here, but I'm afraid they will get lost in the shuffle of other news. /1
news.wfsu.org/post/bill-look…
Background: Vik Amar is one of the law profs who came up w/idea 2 effectively eliminate #ElectoralCollege via simple interstate compact (can be done w/minority of states), rather than formal const'l amendment (requires 3/4 of the states). His comments are thus especially impt. /2
The National Popular Vote compact, for those who haven't been following it, has currently been adopted by 15 states + D.C. Those entities have 196 electoral votes among them. The compact goes into effect if they get just 74 more electors on board. /3 #ElectoralCollege

It seems @ewarren is going after #ElectoralCollege again. Her arguments are emotionally appealing, but fail under further scrutiny. She says: "In most democracies...the person who gets the most votes wins." Friendly reminder: "Most votes" can still = small plurality. Consider: /1
@ewarren In the French 2017 elections, Emmanuel Macron received only 24% of the vote. Marine Le Pen received 21%. The French people were upset w/their choices. In fact, in the run-off that followed, a record number cast a "ballot blanc," which is a protest vote for nobody. /2
@ewarren "How about we make America that kind of democracy?" @ewarren asks. Do we want to be like France? Run-offs b/w 2 candidates who couldn't earn support of even 25%? By contrast, #ElectoralCollege encourages coalition building. (See tweets @ top of my timeline for more on this.) /3

Much discussion lately about nature of our republic: Maybe you've heard this? 2 wolves & a sheep voting on what's for dinner is unjust. Thus, our Constitution has checks & balances to protect the sheep. But did #ElectoralCollege just ensure that 1 sheep can tyrannize 2 wolves? /1
Emphatically, no. It’s the most important point that too many miss. 2016 was simply a close election. Both sides did a terrible job of coalition building. One side did slightly better, but it wasn’t bc 1 sheep outvoted 2 wolves. It was bc many voters in middle sided w/sheep.../2
....even if they weren't enthusiastic abt Trump. It was enough to create a federal majority. Those middle voters thought wolves becoming tyrannical, wanted to disrupt status quo. Indeed, the sheep can never outvote wolves w/o serious effort to get middle voters on their side..../3

Two wolves & a sheep voting on what's for dinner isn't a just system, which is why we have #ElectoralCollege. Yet I see people poking fun at the analogy. They take it too literally on purpose, note that urban voters won't eat rural voters. Dismiss the lesson to be learned.... /1
Our generation suffers from its own lack of knowledge about history. Founders didn't, though. They could cite examples of exactly this dynamic in the failed democracies that came before us. Bare or emotional majorities can be dangerous and destructive. Consider Ancient Greece. /2
Did you know people could be voted out of Ancient Athens? Based on personal dislike? Even if you didn't know this type of historical example, our Founders did. The dangers of simple democracy are real. Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it. /3 #ElectoralCollege

A response to @AOC: (1) #ElectoralCollege isn’t partisan. Serves candidate/party doing best job of coalition building. thehill.com/opinion/campai… Those supporting EC b/c they are #GOP…They are wrong. Also: Those *opposing* EC b/c they are Dem &/or hate Trump…They are wrong, too.
@AOC (2) A puzzling claim. Nat’l pop vote wd centralize power in DC. If #ElectoralCollege eliminated, we’d see new fed election code & bureaucracy to manage elections. AND a pres’l appointee for new bureaucracy. @AOC wants @RealDonaldTrump in charge of his own reelection? Surprising.
@AOC @realDonaldTrump P.S. @AOC implies that only swing states matter. No. History shows: Identity of swing/safe states always changing. Also: Safe states not unimpt. Just made up minds earlier in process. When they are taken for granted, they make views known quickly, as blue wall states did in 2016.

Dear National Popular Vote compact supporters: This should give you pause. Just how sure are you that electors will consistently vote against the outcome in their own states....especially when they are free to vote their conscience? 🤔nbcnews.com/politics/elect… #ElectoralCollege
From 10th Cir case affirming electors right 2 vote conscience: In 1796, an *Adams* elector voted for *Jefferson.* Why? B/c Jefferson won the state & THE ELECTOR CRACKED UNDER PRESSURE. I ask again, #NPVIC supporters, you sure electors will vote against own state? #ElectoralCollege

A lot of fuss today about @AOC's comments that #ElectoralCollege is a scam & promotes racial injustice. She thinks rural areas have too much power in our presidential election system and notes that those areas are disproportionately white. Some food for thought: /1
@AOC 1st, consider that states’ demographics change over time. Indeed, many other aspects of states’ voting changes, too: No state is permanently blue or red, no state is permanently “safe” or “swing." Even TX used to vote Democratic. CA used to vote Republican. /2
@AOC 2nd, even setting that aside, #ElectoralCollege isn’t looking to skin color any more than it looks to voters' religion, industry, type of housing. Purpose of state-by-state election process = voters from variety of regions, states, subcultures have a voice in pres'l election. /3

Twitter this weekend is Exhibit A in why so many elections have been close in #ElectoralCollege lately. No one is listening. No one is trying to understand another viewpoint. Too many are assuming worst of total strangers & blasting vitriol. Respectfully: Disagreement & .... /1
....differing viewpoints are part of living in a diverse country. It doesn't make one side evil. #ElectoralCollege rewards coalition building & candidates who strive to understand a wide variety of Americans. Today, no one is doing that.... /2
So, unless something changes, look forward to another too close election in 2020. And it won't be the #ElectoralCollege's fault. It will be OUR fault for stubbornly refusing to come together as Americans, to listen to each other, & to tackle our common problem. /3

Because American constitutional democracy is “government by the people.” Not “government by the empty expanses of rocks and dirt.”

Want more votes? Change your red state polices so that ppl quit leaving. #ElectoralCollege is a dumb artifact of slave America.
I mean, do the right-wingers making this argument know that Americans have a constitutional right to travel? That we’re not tied like serfs to a birthplace? That most city dwellers MOVED there from red states, because:

Red
States
Suck
That’s
Why
They’re
Empty.
Try raising your minimum wage. Try improving your schools. Try ending the bigotry that runs rampant. And then maybe people will stop fleeing to LA and NY and other urban areas, where people have more votes because there are more people, and that’s what democracy IS.

I’m not big on Tweetstorms, but I suppose if I am ever going to do one, now is the time. 🙂For those who don’t know me: I am the author of several books about #ElectoralCollege. Been studying it since 2001. Yesterday, E. Warren came out against the E.C., as you’ve prob. heard /1
She said: “My view is that every vote matters and the way we can make that happen is that we can have national voting and that means get rid of the electoral college -- and every vote counts.” The audience broke out in applause. /2
Well, no wonder. Most have spent a lifetime hearing that the #ElectoralCollege is evil (slavery) & outdated (we have airplanes/Internet now!). None of it's true, but people have heard it so often that they simply don't know. Here is the truth: /3
