Seems like Trump has turned Ohio into the core red state in the Republican coalition.
I've also noticed a LOT of stories of Nazis coming out of Ohio recently.

What's going on, Ohio??
Ohio went for Obama twice. So it seems like Trump just has some special appeal there.

Maybe it's industrial decay. It's possible that Ohio has just been adapting to the Rust Belt less effectively and proactively than other Midwestern states.

Ohio has been called "ground zero" of the opiate epidemic, which kind of reinforces the idea that it's a particular locus of white working-class despair: news5cleveland.com/news/local-new…
Ohio has also been very resistant to the "new immigration" of Hispanics and Asians. Of the 10 major U.S. cities with the LOWEST percentage of foreign-born residents, five are in Ohio: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U…
In terms of Hispanic and Asian population percentage, Ohio scores considerably lower than Michigan, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin:

If we interpret an Obama-to-Trump shift (and the proliferation of right-wing extremist groups) as evidence of general xenophobia, this seems to fit with the general narrative that the less exposed a region is to the new immigration, the more frightened people are of it.
In other words, Ohio kind of seems like the exemplar of the conventional Trump narrative - Rust Belt decay leading to social breakdown, leading to anger that gets directed at the scapegoat of Hispanic and Asian immigrants.
Of course, this can quickly turn into a self-perpetuating cycle.

Immigrants and universities are the core of any successful Rust Belt revival. bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…
Trumpism will never make Ohio great again. In fact, it will do precisely the opposite.

But how will the people of Ohio ever realize that?
