The PlayStation Classic uses an open source emulator, PCSX. Lesser educated people might see this as a cause of frustration, but here's the reality: it's an acknowledgement that an "amateur" emulator can be just as valid as an "official" one (and they're usually better!).
19 years ago, Sony unsuccessfully tried to sue a PlayStation emulator out of existence (and when they lost, they purchased the emulator and shut it down). Now they're happily using open source emulation for their own products. How far we've come!
I want to expand on this now that it's kind of blowing up. There's been this decades-long myth that emulators a company makes and sells you are somehow better. Now we have acknowledgement from THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE PLAYSTATION that a free emulator is good enough to be official.
I've seen people complaining that they're buying something that's free, but what the heck alternative is there? Should we expect Sony to spend the time and money making something that is probably not going to end up being as good as PCSX? Why?
The collective knowledge of the emulation community is going to exceed "internal" knowledge almost every time. Working at Sony doesn't give you secret access to perfect knowledge of a now-ancient system. To me this is a really obvious move that every company should be making.
Is this emulator any good? No idea honestly. Should you buy the thing? I'm not the one to ask, I think all these toy emulator boxes are junk. None of that matters though, my only point is that a hardware maker is giving validity to an "amateur" emulator, and that's huge.
Do I think it's morally gross to use this open source code without giving back and improving it? Yeah, sure, but to me these are all separate conversations. All I'm interested in right now is that Sony just told you that a free emulator is good enough to be real. That's a win.
