THREAD: 1. Fantastic day @ryeharbour_NR cleaning out one of the pillboxes. Despite heavy rain, our amazing team of volunteers from Sussex Military History Society and the nature reserve shovelled several tons of shingle and sand 6 inches deep from the interior. #ww2Sussex
2. Each bucket of spoil was carefully sifted for finds. We found a large spanner (probably not military) and what may prove to be a handle from an ammo box.
3. A sunny afternoon brought out the Vickers gun and many interested passers-by, including children who got photos for their history projects! It was good to be able to explain the fire tasks and long range capability of the gun, even if setting it up is not very dignified...
4. Before and after - thanks to our team who have done a fantastic job!

1. THREAD: an amazing day @ryeharbour_NR doing archaeological reconstruction with a Vickers gun in one of the pillboxes! #ww2Sussexe
2. The 6 concrete tables were designed for the Vickers gun. Shallow sockets in the concrete were probably to prevent the tripod sliding due to recoil. However, we found only 3 sets of sockets fitted the legs correctly - essential for making the tripod level!
3. Having established the tripod leg settings, the gun was set up in each embrasure and the arcs of fire measured.

THREAD: Spent 3 days @shorehamfort excavating a keyhole-shaped structure outlined in brick. We thought this might have been an emplacement for a WW2 anti-aircraft light machine gun (AA LMG). Stage 1 was to brush off and expose the remains breaking the surface. #ww2Sussex 1/8
Compacted shingle was trowelled off to reveal cinders beneath. Below this was a concrete floor, yet the rear of the structure suggested a sunken entrance. We also had what seemed to be a holdfast with a ring of 1-inch bolts - far too substantial for our AA LMG theory. 2/8
Late on day 2, we decided to put a sondage through the floor to see if the structure went below ground, as nothing was making sense. Breaking through the concrete we realised what we initially thought was the floor was actually a postwar capping to reinstate the track! 3/8

We lived in a compound with a story building of four flats Mama Tutu and Mama Ngozi lived on the ground floor while Sisi Mi, our landlady and Mama Bimbo (My mama) lived on the first floor. Mama Tutu’s flat was below ours while Mama Ngozi’s flat was below Simi Mi’s.
Mama Tutu was the only university graduate in our compound and she never hesitated to let the mothers know, and the kids too. This was why we spoke very little vernacular and zero pidgin around her because she would come down on you like a hammer.

In November 2017 I had an idea to produce a masterclass series that would be watched for free by all and paid for by brands that care about educating and enriching people’s lives. I didn’t know any brand that wanted to come on, I wasn’t even looking.
I just knew that if I concentrated on doing a world standard job, the work would speak for itself.

Listen, that was a bit Naive.

January 2018, I went on a limb and bought equipment for shoot: Cameras, lights, etc. I was ready but only two instructors had agreed to do it.

The medieval formation & modern history of the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, & Lithuania) is a very intricate, difficult topic.
Sadly, key artefacts were deliberately blown up (Boris Stones) stolen (Euphrasia’s Cross) or erased (by propaganda or genocide)

after the 1939 Soviet-Nazi pact such that the 1 artefact unifying the area in #medieval times - the COG ship used by Catholic Crusaders then adopted by Orthodox colonizers & Slavic tribes along the Neman, Daugava, Emmajõgi, Velikaya, & Volkhov Rivers - is terribly rare.

1\ Sometimes, as managers, we only share with our direct reports the information we think they need to get their job done. We do that because we think that's going to make them more productive and focused.

That's a big mistake. #thread 👇
2\ If we withhold information, 1 of 2 things might happen:

A) We don't delegate and end up doing things we shouldn't be doing because "my direct report doesn't know enough". We don't realize that we're making them not know enough and adding us more work that we could...
3\ ... use for doing other things that we should be doing.

B) We're making it harder for our direct reports to talk to other people directly to get shit done, and in turn, make them always come to us to know who to go to.
