The inherent problem with Facebook:
if Zuckerberg wasn't rich + able to 'buy' a wife and friends, he'd be one of those people being targeted for radicalization.

Oh. Wait.....
The irony, though: if he didn't have legions of paid employees suckling from the teat of Mother Russia, he wouldn't make the cut as a leader, not even one behind the scenes.

With the upcoming Neil-Gaiman-orchestrated "Dreaming" line at DC comics, I thought it might be time to revisit Neil Gaiman's wonderful "Sandman."

It's funny, I was just thinking today about the late sixties paranoia about cultural psychosis and insanity.

Modern pop culture is similarly fixated on the idea of insanity rippling through the popular unconscious.

Here's the #Facebook "scandal" in a nutshell:
(1/10) In 2004 Mark #Zuckerberg creates essentially the biggest single advertising platform of all time.
(2/10) Facebook's genius is that instead of advertising that's coupled with original content (TV, radio, print, other websites) the "original content" of FB is the audience itself, as they "connect" with each other.
(3/10) Like any & every business, ever, at some point FB needs to find a way to get people to voluntarily give them lots of money. Who though? Well, companies/entities that want to influence groups of people to do things (duh).

The hearing is now officially starting, with opening remarks from the ranking members of both committees (Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee).
In her opening remarks, Sen. Feinstein mentions last night's news that Cambridge Analytica had access to Facebook users' private direct messages.
I hope someone asks Zuckerberg how Facebook can claim they didn't know Cambridge Analytica was still using data they harvested, given that FB sent employees to "embed" w/ the Trump campaign's digital team — so FB employees were working in the same office as Cambridge Analytica.

Robert and I spent 6 months 'inside' IS FB communities documenting their culture and strategies. We also mapped the connections between 1000 FB accounts from every inhabited continent. Full (lengthy) report to be published by @FightExtremism in early May.
We saw 1st-hand IS use FB to recruit westerners and how FB's recommended friends algorithm rapidly connects you to active IS networks. Once one IS supporter is friended, dozens from around the globe are recommended. Read this thread for just some examples:
Blatant lies by #Zuckerberg. @RobertPostings & I found dozens of public profiles of American IS supporters explicitly calling for terror attacks & using FB Live to discus how to carry out attacks. FB has done nothing to combat extremism on its platform.
