Owen Jones was a Victorian architect & designer who in 1856 published "Grammar of Ornament", a cross-cultural design masterpiece. The lavish folio depicts stunning patterns, motifs & ornaments in 112 illustrated color plates. [1]

Egyptian Capitals showing varied designs of lotus & papyrus motifs. The center capital #1 is from a large column in the Temple of Luxor, Thebes. It represents a full-blown papyrus decorated around it w/ papyri & lotus buds alternating.

What Basho is referring to in his poem is that not all Noh performers wear masks. Because the waki ["supporting"] plays a character who is living in the present, he does not wear a mask. This is called hitamen or a "direct mask". [2]

Exquisitely done by Exekias, the greatest black-figure potter/painter. Dionysus reclines on a dolphin-shaped boat while grapevines laden with seven bunches miraculously sprout beside its mast, and seven dolphins/pirates swim in a coral-red sea around the boat-ca. 530 BC
The Tyrrhenians is an exonym used by Greek authors referring to non-Greeks but according to Strabo they're Etruscans for whom the Tyrrhenian Sea is named after. However, Herodotus associates them with non-Hellenic people, the Pelasgians in Thrace. [1]

In honor of #Armistice100 : the first time the poppy is connected with a fallen soldier appears in a beautiful simile in Homer's Iliad Bk VIII.

Teucer's arrow pierces the chest of Priam's son, Gorgythion, then his helmeted head bows like a poppy weight down by its seeds & rain.
The above Homer's Iliad passage comes from Robert Fagles 1990 lyrical translation [1]
The poppy μήκων (mḗkōn) capsule [kodeia] was associated w/ the goddess of harvest/fertility Demeter because the poppy flowers at harvest time. It also alludes to the poppy's pain-relieving properties assuaging Demeter's intense grief in search of her lost daughter, Persephone.

The #mind is a guide for great journeys. If you are going somewhere, the mind is very happy; in your going somewhere the mind can feel enhanced. But if you are not going anywhere, just sitting #silently, doing nothing, the mind feels very #sad.
It will happen almost always to meditators that when the mind feels sad, it starts creating #boredom for you; that is a strategy of the mind. The mind is saying, "Come on! Let us go somewhere, let us do something. Why are you sitting? Just sitting doing nothing brings boredom!"

Disgraceful: #Egyptian court has upheld a two-year prison sentence against Amal Fathy, a woman human rights defender convicted over a video she posted online criticizing the Egyptian authorities for failing to tackle sexual harassment.
“The fact that a survivor of sexual harassment is being punished with a two-year prison sentence simply for speaking out about her experience is utterly disgraceful. This verdict makes a mockery of justice and should be a stain on the conscience of the #Egyptian authorities.”
Amal Fathy complained on Facebook about being sexually harassed twice in one day. She was sentenced to 2yrs in prison for “spreading false news.” Her sentencing aims to terrorize women out of public space & is green light to men that they can assault women w/impunity.Shame #Egypt

Owen Jones probably goes for lunch with Tommy Robinson's Quilliam handlers, they probably go on cushy weekend retreats together, the equivalent of Bilderberg summits for agent provocateurs of the 'left' and 'right' bourgeoisie.
Much of what constitutes 'politics' in Britain is simple spectacle & distraction, in military terms, the bourgeoisie's first line of defense is 'the media' of all stripes, 'left' & 'right' are given the task of bogging down & disorientating the enemy - the working class.
'The left' agent provocateurs like Jones focus on MI5 cutout clown provocateurs like Tommy Robinson of 'the right' in order to shield the working classes real enemy: the capitalist class, their State, their army, their police, their death-squads & their media agents.

THREAD: there is no one way to be a writer, no one way to tell a story, no one way to do this thing we do as a hobby or as a job or as an art form. Some write a little every day, in an office; some write a lot at one time at varying, sporadic points. It's all okay.
I think it's important to challenge all pieces of "Known Writing Advice," all those chestnuts of Vital Lore, and to see what they are and what works for you. We all have our own weird fingerprints to imprint upon this thing we do.
I think it IS important to talk about the things you do and the processes you use to write and tell a story and to hold them up and examine them -- share them with others, and listen to their ways of doing things, too.
