On the 3rd Wednesday of November in 2011,near Tahrir, #Egyptian riot police beat me,broke my left arm & right hand, sexually assaulted me & their supervising officer threatened me with gang rape.Reading awful news, today, about #Saudi feminists’ torture & sexual assault is gutting
I was detained for 6hrs by Interior ministry & 6 by Military Intelligence during which I was blindfolded and interrogated and denied medical attention. My arms were in casts for 3 months after. Reading Trump today so casually siding w/ a tyrant who killed a journalist is gutting
I keep trying to imagine what would have happened had Trump been in office when #Egyptian police and the military detained me. I
When I was in Interior Ministry custody, an activist I didn’t know came in to the room where I was being held. I asked to use his phone to tweet something because I knew my family would be worried sick. I tweeted “beaten arrested interior ministry” & the phone died seconds after
Until I was released I had no idea what reaction was. I was told that #FreeMona trended in 15mins & that Guardian & Al Jazeera reported on my disappearance and tweet. The State Dept tweeted back to me saying something supportive that I can’t remember now.
I criticized Obama and his then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton plenty back in 2011. The State Dept responded to my tweet (I’m a dual citizen) and US embassy staff in Cairo spent Thanksgiving looking for me in police stations & hospitals.
I am lucky-I am alive & free. People paid attention to what was happening to me. My platform, fame, name, etc saved me.I know if I was an unknown Egyptian woman I might’ve been gang raped as riot police supervising officer had threatened.I might have been disappeared indefinitely
Jamal Khashoggi was well-known and had a massive platform and none of that saved him. The State Dept in Nov 2011 helped find me. Today, the US Secretary of State and his president played defense for the murderer of a journalist. And they have said nothing about tortured feminists
I am lucky. I am alive and I am free. But today the US President and his Secretary of State gave a green light to every tyrant ally of the US out there that they could murder journalists as long as those journalists were an “enemy of the state.”
And in letting a tyrant off the hook for the murder of a journalist, the US President and his top diplomat have given a green light to the abuse of critics of that tyrant, #Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman, who has detained feminists who are being tortured in his prison.
I am alive. I am free. But today US President & Sec of State gave a green light to every pro-US tyrant that they could murder & abuse & disappear w/no consequence. That includes Sisi, the tyrant of my country of birth #Egypt, who hasn’t been held accountable for massacre of 1000.
Today is a shameful day for the US.

Today is a dangerous day for those of us who insist on opposing authoritarians everywhere, including opposing Trump himself.

I will always fight him as well as Sisi and Mohamed Bin Salman, and tyrants everywhere.
I am alive. I am free. And too many friends and people I care about are not. I don’t always mark the anniversary of my assault but this one is really testing me. I wrote this soon after surgery to fix my left arm. google.com/amp/s/amp.theg…
