ID cards are, in fact, popular and effective as a means of making our immigration system less dysfunctional. I suspect the chunk of the electorate won over by proposing them is far larger than the one alienated.
I also would really like to know how anti-ID people would come down if given a blunt choice: “Which is your priority? Liberal immigration rules or no ID cards?” They tend to reject the existence of this trade-off. Wrongly, I think. If they *had* to choose - them which?
For me it is a no-brainer because I think the case against ID cards is mostly nonsense. Plenty of sensible liberal countries use th and they solve a lot of administrative problems that contribute to the dysfunction of the British state (esp on immigration).
