1/3 Another take on how journalists failed. nytimes.com/2019/01/22/opi…. Nice to see, and all true, but IMHO this misses the real problem, which I have yet to see a single one of these journalistic mea culpas address:
2/3 The problem is not that journalists should have been more deliberate in taking time to get the full story. It's that journalists thought "Breaking News! High school kid being an obnoxious jerk! More at 11!" was newsworthy in the first place.
3/3 I'm not saying he was indeed being an obnoxious jerk (I personally don't believe he was). But *even if* you believe he indeed was a jerk, a high schooler doing what millions of high schoolers do is SOOO not deserving of the national news spotlight.

2/3 Yet, according to other grievance mongerers, it's also a sin to serve ethnic food that *isn't* properly authentic. Example: independent.co.uk/student/news/c…. Well, which is it?
3/3 Another example here: washingtonpost.com/news/morning-m…. Either way, you're guilty: If you seek authenticity, then you're engaging in white supremacy. But if you aren't sufficiently authentic, then you're culturally appropriating.
There is simply no winning with these people.

1/ @AOC is completely on point. I used to work on face reco commercially (and having been on the wrong side of working on a biased model), I thought people might find helpful concrete examples of *some* of the ways face AI systems can come to be biased.
2/ Experts on Twitter have explained that the documented biases in face reco systems happen because of biased data. So I’m going to talk about: (1) where that (biased) data comes from. (2) How choices in bias measurement matter too.
3/ (I'll be speaking generally about different things that have happened in industry, and not anything specific to my employer. These are also my own opinions and do not represent the views of my employer.)

I attended Nuestra Señora del Rosario school, located in Espinal, 15Km away from Chicoral. Due to the high heat by noon, all schools start really early back home. This meant, I had to wake up at 5am to attend school every morning since I was 4 years old. #VoicesIWS

My company was raided. It should have been a straightforward matter. But the #MetPolice & #LBRUT forgot to seize my computer & came back to do a 2nd raid. The search warrant didn't permit a second entry, however, #LBRUT entered unlawfully
