1/3 Another take on how journalists failed. nytimes.com/2019/01/22/opi…. Nice to see, and all true, but IMHO this misses the real problem, which I have yet to see a single one of these journalistic mea culpas address:
2/3 The problem is not that journalists should have been more deliberate in taking time to get the full story. It's that journalists thought "Breaking News! High school kid being an obnoxious jerk! More at 11!" was newsworthy in the first place.
3/3 I'm not saying he was indeed being an obnoxious jerk (I personally don't believe he was). But *even if* you believe he indeed was a jerk, a high schooler doing what millions of high schoolers do is SOOO not deserving of the national news spotlight.
