It’s interesting that the ‘freedom’ that Brexiters seem to want - freedom to make trade deals - is freedom for government and big business, whilst the freedom they want to take away - freedom of movement - is freedom for individuals. You know, people.
And when I say interesting, I mean revealing. Brexit is about a shift of power *away* from people, and towards those already with power. ‘Trade deals’ mean nothing to most people. The terms are meaningless, the results too remote to have an effect.
There are, of course, peripheral benefits to trade deals. And by that I mean junkets, limousines, dinners, general gallivanting and carousing. No kick-backs of course, because we don’t do corruption in the UK. Not us. Never.
And these ‘benefits’ happen whether or not the terms of the trade deal are at all helpful, or even a patch on the existing trade deals of the EU. For those flying around the world - or sailing on the New Britannia - it’s an exciting life, pretending to be Victorian era diplomats
For us, it means nothing. The chances of any real economic impact of the trade deals being beneficial are negligible. More likely negative than positive. And the losses from our freedom of movement being taken away are significant.
...but that’s part of the point. It’s putting the ordinary people back in their place, whilst elevating the Brexit Buccaneers to a new level, and a new life. That’s obviously attractive to them. It shouldn’t be to us - and we shouldn’t be fooled into thinking it’s a good thing.
It’s a con. It’s fakery. It’s a game - and we’re the losers.
