(1) Thread: The active shooter exercise at Walter Reed Medical Center today.

It was NOT a "false alarm." It was a planned exercise. Everyone who took the proper precautions did the right thing.
(2) Civilian reporters are falling over themselves in disgust at this exercise and the 60 or so minutes it took for the all clear to be given.
(3) Seriously, Jennifer Griffin, the wounded vets at Walter Reed do not expect an apology for a routine preparedness drill intended to save their lives if there is a real security threat onsite in the future.

The same goes for all military & families there.
(4) OF COURSE those in charge of the exercise did not tell anyone it was a drill. It wouldn't work, then, would it?

When there are reports of an active shooter ANYWHERE, don't waste your energy trying to figure out if it's a drill or not. Just follow your training & wait.
(5) "What training?" you say.

D'uh, get training on situational awareness & response to COMMON threats like active shooters. Military personnel get this training early & often.

Look at all the resources listed on this page:

(6) "Shelter in place" is the usual advice but I prefer "secure in place" bc it allows for more than just hiding, if possible.

Too many people STILL do not know what to do in an emergency.

For that reason, I think it's a good thing that a bunch of people were upset by this.
(7) Users of healthcare facilities need to become more situationally aware. These sites are high risk for active shooters & other violence. Any place where people gather is at risk, but especially a place where stressful conversations are had, & people with mental illness attend.
(8) Personally, I want to see hospitals secured like airports are. Hospitals attract people people who are crazy and/or angry. There is a lot of anger directed at health providers, because medicine isn't perfect. Receiving bad news can make someone flip out.
