Today someone asked me for the sociological idea everyone should know. My reply: Individuals make choices, but they don't get to choose the choices available to them, and some people have far more choices than others. Curious to hear which idea you'd, um, choose. @ASAnews
The second key sociological idea? Probably the Thomas theorem, about the power of interpretation: *If people define situations as true, they are true in their consequences.* This is an especially important idea today, in our fragmented and polarized social world. @ASAnews
Idea #3: Cities create more possibilities for building social groups and subcultures that match people's interests, and cities dwellers tend to have larger social networks. But living in cities means being surrounded by strangers, so subjectively, city people often feel alone.
