After becoming the nation’s busiest lung transplant program six years ago, Houston Methodist hospital scaled back the number and difficulty of transplants it performed.

For some patients, that meant having to look elsewhere for treatment. bit.ly/2U1XmLB
Top Methodist officials acknowledged the below-average outcomes and said they proactively made changes to turn things around, ultimately avoiding the sort of federal crackdown that caused St. Luke’s to lose Medicare funding for heart transplants this year.
St. Luke’s says it has made numerous improvements, including hiring new surgeons, and it is appealing the decision.

Six years ago she was getting her last hour of sleep. She would wake up and get ready for work just like it was any other day.

I am grateful to know that she was so happy that morning, playing jokes on her colleague, helping to get a coffee stain out of a sweater
returning a perfectly folded scarf that she borrowed to wear to the winter concert the night before.

Her morning at work would start out like any other. Busy, efficient. She did not know that the PPT meeting would be her last. She heard a noise and silenced the room.
Was that gunshots? Holy shit, it was gunshots! She stood from her chair and walked towards the door of the conference room. She saw the shooter. She turned briefly to warn the others. “SHOOTER, STAY PUT!”

Six years ago, I interviewed for summer jobs at law firms on Bay Street. You might be among the hundreds of law students are about to do the same.

Let me share a few things I’ve learned since I was in your shoes — speaking only for myself, of course.
1. Law firms are never looking for just one “type” of summer student.

We’ve learned, from long experience, that diverse teams are better teams. We’re interested in your unique combination of skills and experiences. We don’t care if you drink, or ski, or know which fork to use.
2. You have more power than you think.

Every lawyer you’ll meet has chosen their profession, their job, and their practice. This week, we’ll ask students to validate our choices by making similar ones. We want you to want to work for us. That gives you leverage. Use it.

So ... I have been planning something a very long time that I haven't shared here - it used to feel like a silly dream, but now it's my retirement plan. I'm buying land and building a home - with no loans. Lemme tell u-this scheme has taken some dedication, discipline, and magic.
I've "owned" 2 homes b4 in my life - I lost both during times that coincided w housing market problems and break ups w my children's fathers - they were both heart aches to lose. I can barely talk about it.
The first home that I bought was built for Frank Phillips of the u know big Phillips Oil Corp - it was built in the 20s and had a speakeasy built into the basement ... it was like a small castle, stunning w wood floors and amazing architectural features - huge corner lot

I was eight when I learned the word ‘shrapnel.’

Our teacher told us that someone had brought a gun to Thurston High School. And gone to the cafeteria. And started shooting. She looked extremely sad, but her teachers’ aid looked sadder.

Her son went to Thurston.
She was crying, and told us that she would have to leave to go to the hospital. “He’s going to be OK,” she told us through tears, “it was just shrapnel.” And then she left.
Shrapnel is when something explodes, I told my mom later. It's when a bullet breaks apart and some of it hits you.
