A short thread on the background to @japantimes' new openly neo-imperialist position. In 2017, the paper was bought by the 'News2U' corporation - a shady PR company with no news background before it bought the Japan Times. asia.nikkei.com/Business/The-J… 1/4
News2U promised to keep JT's editorial independence, but Chairperson, Minako Suematsu, was recently appointed as a fellow of the Dentsu Institute news2u-group.com/en/company/off… 2/4
The Dentsu Institute is the meda think-tank of massive PR / media firm, #Dentsu, “It is not like any company in the world... You are the customer, but they are the master." ft.com/content/c0c3ee… Dentsu plays a key role in the return to a more right-wing Japan under #Abe 3/4
One of Dentsu Institute's themes is "media reliability", dentsu.com/news/release/2…, an obivous euphemism for media compliance. As main English-language paper in Japan, @japantimes was relatively independent of Japan's state-corporate control of media. Now it will be a mouthpiece.
I'm really feeling for all the excellent journalists @JapanTimes today. What can you do? It's not like there are loads of jobs for English-language journalists in Japan. Is it time for a new independent rival to JT? But where would the money come from? How could it fight Dentsu?
NB: the 'editor's note' that sparked all this was published on the editor's blog which, as several people have pointed out, is clearly targeted not at JT's English-language readership but at a Japanese-language audience (and probably a right-wing one) minakokambara.com/archives/2018/…
