I read through the National Climate Assessment and pulled out some factoids that probably got missed over the past week. There's a lot in there, here are 10 of them. A thread...
1. Firefighting will cost billions. As much $13 billion by 2099 to be exact. And the frequency of very large fires could triple with climate change.
2. Allergies will increase. This is because growing seasons are getting longer, and ragweed will produce more pollen with warmer temperatures. Oak pollen could also send people to the emergency room due to increased asthma.
3. Playgrounds will get hotter. Here's a stunning thermo-image of just how hot one playground in Phoenix already gets in direct sunlight.
4. Dairy cows will feel heat stress. This will not only impact their appetite, digestion, and lactation, it will make their milk less nutritious. And the industry expects production to decline a bit due to heat stress.
5. By 2050 between $66-$106 billion worth of real estate could be underwater in a high-emissions scenario. This will impact not just property and business owners but also communities who will see lower tax revenue and fewer community services as a result.
6. Traffic jams will get worse. Here's a graph showing just how much worse under various sea level rise scenarios.
7. Less snow means more drought in the Southwest. And this means a much higher risk of 'megadroughts' -- dry periods that last for 10 years or more.
8. Tropical regions will see fish stock decline as there will be fewer species able to live in such hot waters. This will hurt fishing communities in Hawaii, the Pacific Islands and the Gulf of Mexico.
9. Hospitals are at risk of storm surges. In Maimi-Dade County Florida 11% could be at risk with a Cat 2 storm, 68% under a Cat 5. In Charleston County, South Carolina, 65% of its hospitals could be hit with a Cat 2, 82% with a Cat 4.
10. More agriculture-specific weather stations are needed. Why? Because there is such a varied way climate change will impact crops, and one part of adapting means having accurate weather predictions (+ a lot of other stuff like climate-friendly agriculture methods).
Basically, climate change is here and it is impacting literally every aspect of our lives. The impacts are varied, simultaneous, and cascading. My full piece here: thinkprogress.org/national-clima…
