Deputy U.S. Marshal Killed in the Line of Duty in Tucson, AZ While Protecting Community

Washington, DC – Deputy U.S. Marshal Chase White, 41, sustained fatal gunshot wounds while serving a fugitive warrant last night in Tucson, Arizona at approximately 7:30 p.m. EST.

Deputy White was rushed to Banner-University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries later in the evening.

Deputy White was a 3-year veteran of the U.S. Marshals Service assigned to the District of Arizona. He was part of a fugitive task force executing a warrant for the arrest of Ryan Schlesinger, 26, who was wanted by the Tucson Police Department.

The team located Schlesinger at a residence in Tucson and approached the home. During their approach, Schlesinger fired upon them. Deputy White was struck with multiple rounds; the team returned fire.

Schlesinger remained barricaded inside the residence, but ultimately surrendered and was taken into custody.

Deputy White received emergency trauma care on-site and was transported immediately to Banner-University Medical Center where he died. He is the first federal marshal to be killed in the line of duty in Tucson in 66 years.

“The District of Arizona lost one of its finest last night. Deputy Chase White was an outstanding professional, a man who was dedicated to eradicating crime from the streets of Tucson,” said United States Marshal David Gonzales, District of Arizona.

“Please keep his family, and his brothers and sisters in the law enforcement community, in your thoughts as we deal with this tragedy. Losing one of our own is the most difficult situation we face.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.

“We are all extremely saddened by the tragic death of our brother, Deputy U.S. Marshal Chase White, last night in Tucson, Arizona. He was shot and killed while performing his mission. It’s a dangerous job, but Chase was devoted to making his community and this nation safer.

His sacrifice will not be forgotten,” David J. Anderson, Acting Deputy Director of the U.S. Marshals Service. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends, and our law enforcement community. The nation lost a hero last night.”

Deputy White was raised in central Illinois and joined the USMS in 2015 in the District of Arizona. He served on active duty in the Air Force from 2000-2007.

White was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserve, serving with the 926th Wing located at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. He is survived by his wife and four children.
