To clarify, a feed that is tweaked but largely dictacted by posts from people you have proactively subscribed to to me is exteemely different than a platform that dictates your feed entirely and learns your preferences the more you use it.
To miss the difference will make it difficult to understand why TikTok is able to get its users to watch so many videos. (In China, the average Douyin/TikTok user watches 100-200 videos per day)
Other major western consumer platforms of course use AI to curate feeds but none of them rely entirely on AI in the same way as Bytedance. Which model maximizes engagement long term? Still remains to be seen. But the Bytedance approach is new and worth studying.
