Therefore many Nigerians missed registration at birth
The National Population Commission is the body with the statutory responsibility to register births and deaths in Nigeria
Birth registration is the only means to provide a child with a national identity
An unregistered child does not exist
Birth registration is compulsory and it is the right of every Nigerian child to have a name and an IDENTITY
Most Nigerian parents give their children names in lavish ceremonies but forget to give them identities through registration at birth
Birth registration is good for national planning and it provides statistics
Birth registration is the only means to prove AGE.
Birth registration is backed by law and the Child Rights Act.
You can't fight for the rights of a child that is not duly registered in the court of law
Birth registration will help in health sector programming and planning. To avoid under planning
But sadly, the National Population Commission does not have the capacity to get all Nigerian children registered. There's a need for a door to door campaign to ensure this happens
What can others like the media, health care providers, traditional rulers and others do to make birth registration the right of every single Nigerian child?
