Currently, the US has only two operational "icebreakers" or ships that can cut thru otherwise impenetrable ice. The US Coast Guard has said that this is a considerable problem because of the two ships, one is 40+ years old and is well past the end of its expected...

shelf life. This isn't sufficient to meet US maritime transport needs in polar regions where climate change has actually altered the landscape so much that breaking through floes of "loose" ice, if you will, is fast becoming a problem.

A new fleet of icebreakers are needed, according to USCG. But that will cost billions and could take years. For now,Congress must figure out whether it should OK $750M for a new icebreaker or send funding to the US-Mexico border wall.
