Re: how to treat historical figures who supported slavery (GWhitefield & his self-examination questions). 1st-dont overly lionize any figure from the past. Whitefield had terrible weaknesses but he also did many things that changed history & we should learn what we can from him.
A good book comes from Bruce Hindmarsh who explores GW’s spirituality
in The Spirit of Early Evangelicalism. Second, therefore be selective. If they are deadly wrong about one thing, does it mean they are wrong about everything & can never be quoted? No-Think David & the Psalms.
Third, remember the complications of context. Whitefield, a student at the time,
basically got the diary Qs from JWesley, who later taught slavery was a sin. Must we still not cite them because Whitefield, who years later supported slavery, used them? Again, No.

The popular concept–that we should each determine our own morality–is based on the belief that the spiritual realm is nothing at all like the rest of the world. Does anyone really believe that?
For many years after Sunday services I remained in the auditorium for another hour to field questions. One of the most frequent statements I heard was that ‘Every person has to define right and wrong for him- or herself.’

People are allowed to make informed decisions that will be of great benefit to them, their partners and offspring, friends & community. If someone decides to travel to different place to study, work, start a family or business, for leisure, it is their choice.

Let people be.
Any place or vicinity or situation that threatens their peace of mind, safety, education, career, health, friendship, and life, should be avoided. So yes people can move from one place to another for reasons that will guarantee them safety & better options in life.

Let them be.
If you love misery, nakba and you glorify suffering, etc. that is your personal choice & mentality. Nobody is stopping you from choosing to stay & endure whatever you prefer.

Just don't call people names for wanting & choosing to pursue better opportunities while they are alive.

Anytime throughout history when the masses have felt like they're losing their power & their voice (because economy, jobs, immigration, equal rights for women, queer/trans folks, etc etc) we know (((we're))) gonna be blamed. As Borat would say, "throw the Jew down the well!"
Antisemitism - from the right or left, it doesn't matter - always rises when people feel like they are losing their power. People feel like they need to blame someone, find a scapegoat, for their own failings or for a shifting society or for matters outside of their control.
As a result, conspiracy theories - which exist as a way for people to try and make sense of things they don't understand or that are outside their control - are typically deeply antisemitic. These conspiracy theories posit that Jews are the masterminds controlling world events.

1) Understand your audience.

If you speak out about sexual abuse, know that there will certainly be survivors of sexual violence in the room. The probability that you can speak about sexual violence without engaging the trauma history of someone listening is just about zero.
How would a victim hear your words? In what ways would it comfort them? Hurt them? It might be wise to run a draft of your comments by a survivor of sexual violence and/or someone with another kind of #MeToo history.
