The elite wanted a world without God and they got it. Now they are finding it an uncongenial place.

But in fact what the elite wanted was a world of certitude in which they would pronounce on the verities. Actually a world with God contains mystery and uncertainty that cannot be banished. It's a world where we are not in control, where there is something large in the room.

But digital omniscience has laid bare the weakness of institutions. The handholds crumble in our grasp. We are falling through space! But wait. We were always falling through space except now we are deprived of our props. Time to face the very large presence in the room.

We must come to a truce at least with the presence, to learn to live in doubt, which is another way to say in faith, and hope we hear a word, receive some sign. But we cannot return to the childish world of the 1990s, to the narrative and fake politicians. That way is barred.

What shall become of me? What shall become of my works? Does truth never fail? Does love never die?

“Come,” he said.

Will you make it? I don't know. Perhaps nobody knows. But the only way to find out is dare to live, because living is your only chance.
