He misses his own point. The populist phenomenon in general and Trump in particular is a creation of the Left. It is the result of a backlash. The "transformative" candidate he craves may create something never seen before.
There is this belief on the Left that politics is molded by conspiracy; that somewhere there are Republicans meeting in a country club planning to bring back the '50s. But in reality no one is in control because the world is too complex to completely manipulate.
This is why the French, British, the Russians and even the Chinese have been surprised by crises they never saw coming. If the progressives think they can control the future with their toy models they are in for a surprise. Look what happened to Chavez.
Politics is not about being in control or riding some Arc of History. It is fundamentally about risk management and dealing with the unknowable.
The most important task is creating a reserve or design margin against the unknowable. All strategists have learned this the hard way. But because the utopians think they "know" the future they are confident some form of central planning and tweaking will see them through.
Nowhere is this hubris clearer than with "climate change". Macron is even now trying to craft some tax/wage/carbon trading package that will rescue the planet, open the borders, sate the proletariat and save his political neck. He allowed for everything except surprise.
What no politician will tell the public is that even if we do everything right, build up every reserve possible and make all possible arrangements we can STILL fail: 99.99% of all species on earth have gone extinct and they tried their best. We are not, alas, in control.
But we can make the best effort. The epitaph of civilization should not read: here lie the guys who knew it all -- and didn't. Transformative my a**.
