THREAD: I counted up over the weekend the various *distinct* investigations targeting Donald Trump right now. There are at least *17* of them. Here are my five top observations: ... wired.com/story/mueller-…
1) When you look at all of them together, we're probably thinking of this wrong—it's not a Russia probe, it's a financial investigation. Russia's only a part of it—and the full picture includes multiple countries trying to buy influence from Trump. ... wired.com/story/mueller-…
2) While Trump said he’d see investigations into his business dealings as crossing a “red line,” it appears that Trump himself obliterated that line, intermingling his business and campaign such that prosecutors can't untangle one without the other. ... wired.com/story/mueller-…
3) Remember, these investigation can get really large. Watergate wasn't just 5 burglars and yada yada yada Nixon resigns. Ultimately 69 people were charged as part of that investigation, 48 of whom pleaded guilty or were found guilty at trial. .... wired.com/story/mueller-…
4) We know there are cooperators in nearly all 17 investigations. An old prosecutors' maxim says, "If you're not at the table, you're on the table." Increasingly, Trump and his family are the only ones not *at* the table. That's why he's scared of "rats." wired.com/story/mueller-…
5) These 17 investigations are just the cases focused on Donald Trump himself. It doesn't include any probes Dems will launch when they arrive in charge on Capitol Hill, nor any of the IG, ethics, or criminal probes into other administration members. wired.com/story/mueller-…
