Friends, please follow @KimCrayton1. She helped me see how poor leadership requires risk management and how women like myself need to stop giving too much benefit of doubt. Refusing to step down when unfit to lead poses risks. We're seeing the results right now. (And too late).
I used to think the risks were a disorganized process or org inefficiencies, but now I've seen those issues bubble up into straight-up, anti-mission behavior. Powerful women have been left out of the discussions because "leaders" want control. Too many wrong moves.
These powerful women are speaking out now and additional stories are surfacing. More patterns are becoming clear. Keep poking at it and stay loud. #gdiStrike

Aaaaand so ends the 4.5 years I spent at @girldevelopit. Lost access to my GDI email and Slack today (as planned) and I keep vacillating between excitement for the chance to apply myself to better causes and immense heartbreak, as this is not the way envisioned the end. A thread.
I'm super torn because a.) I've been stewing on this day a longggg time b.) I've recognized that my persistence doesn't always help c.) I'd rather pour my energy into positive, productive things instead. But there's unfinished business and I want to keep poking a bit longer.
The #gdistrike lives on in my eyes because it's possible to hold an org accountable from the outside and I'd like to maintain as much transparency as possible on the inner workings and failures. Members (and potentially future members) deserve to know the risks.

Two days ago, a podcast was released by @KimCrayton1 ft. @shanisebarona that broke the last of my hope for an organization I called home. Yesterday, this powerful network assembled in a way that felt like the old days of @girldevelopit -- women pushing together for change.
As a result, more than half of GDI's chapters are represented in the form of signatures from both current and former leadership members wanting to send a message to the @girldevelopit Board and HQ members: this is not okay.

So one thing to consider here is that even asking "can a woman beat Trump" is gendered and reductive, unfortunately. To lump candidates' chances by gender, rather than by policy, is an intrinsically negative and gendered trope. It's a solid attempt. But far to go.
This is a thoroughly reported piece. It tackles a lot. But as long as we report on women as new and exotic beings who have to make a case to lead -- rather than, you know, half the human race -- the conversation about gender is not a contemporary and relevant one.
I just want to elaborate on why. I say that. My premises start with three facts:

1) One (1) woman has ever been a major-party nominee for president (Hillary Cl*nton)

2) Women won a record number of seats in the most recent Congress

3) MeToo movement has transformed the US

Y'all need to hear what he's is trying to tell you. He's afraid the right has more power than we do. He's afraid that they'll use these tactics to attack the things he cares about. It's reactionary and wrong. But understanding his reaction to his fear is useful.
There is a set of people who will always make the case that we shouldn't fight because the other side is meaner and they're afraid of getting hit.
It's important to acknowledge what @NateSilver538 is saying. He's willing to discard one of the few tactics that is creating consequences for the harmful rhetoric on the right. He's willing to allow that rhetoric to flourish because of some *imagined* threat to him.

Adam asks a really great question here, and I'd like to offer something that many of us have been saying for going on three years now: Trump folks are not speaking from a place of consistent ideology. They're speaking from a place of petty hatred and resentment. (thread)
I feel like a lot of well-meaning reporters/journalists/pundits/politicians really want to make sense of all this and many of them still refuse to believe that Trump folks are just hateful people who prioritize their need to hate over common sense and integrity. Sorry but...
It really is that simple. This was never about so-called "economic anxiety". It was never about "feeling unheard". Trump folks feel the ground beneath their feet shifting away from White America, and it's that shifting of power that angers and terrifies them.
