a quick thread on #autism, and people.
My son is loud sometimes. Like, really loud.
We work on it every time we go out, it's important to do, and he tries very hard & nails it often. Sometimes not. And over time, I'm inured to nasty little looks & asides-partially because
I know how far he has come, but mostly because he gets upset when he sees me upset. Didn't do anyone any good if I laid into the dirty looker, because my son didn't know they were being nasty. He helps me be my best and sunniest person and it's such a blessing,
Anyway-
yesterday we stopped for gas & he was in the BEST mood and for my boy, the best mood means singing. Loudly! So I just let him go with it-i mean, have you been in the best mood and you want to sing loudly but your filter won't let you?
So I was in my head like "you go ahead and rock you some 'Winter Wonderland' buddy"and the lady in front of us in line turns around, looks at him, and I'm thinking "here we go" but she says "I love your singing" with this amazing, big, sincere smile.
It was so obviously genuine that it stopped my son in his tracks. And he smiled at her, and looked at me with the same smile and right there in the gas station we had this moment of total connection and joy in that connection.
and i can't stop thinking about that lady and how she made our day brighter, just by loving his singing, and telling him.
And another example of just really how wonderful people can be, in the smallest and most impactful ways.
