Great unions always have a wonderful story. Our wedding was not different. I was the second son in the family to break tradition by marrying from another tribe. As at the time, I had no plans to remain in Nigeria, this was during the 2008 financial crisis.
Traffic was also the tool the Devil deployed but thankfully I saw it coming. I had a heated argument with my mum over this as she insisted it was a taboo for the groom to sleep elsewhere before his wedding day. That I must leave from home.
For those with good memory like mine, you will recall that August of 2008 was when the third mainland bridge was shutdown for repairs a month after Ogun River breached its banks and flooded Ikorodu part of town. So there were traffic threats at each end of Lagos.
Long story short, I moved my wife and my recalcitrant mum by force by fire to Magodo a day before and also made arrangement for the Officiating Ministers who were mostly Islanders to the mainland to avoid the third mainland bottleneck.
The only people we couldn’t move were the caterers who cooked from mum’s place. Suffice to say the food served as lunch if not almost dinner because as forecasted the traffic was gangster but our wedding was spared because of foresight. Mum never apologized & I did not sue. 😇
The food was late but we were never late. No one starved either. To God be the Glory.
