/n Who is most likely to attribute racial inequality to genetic differences in intellectual ability (which many would call 'old fashioned racism')? While you wouldn't be faulted for guessing 'white people', you'd be wrong. In fact, according to the GSS, whites are no more...
/n likely to give this response than hispanics and blacks (and even appear to be less likely in recent years). So who's the biggest offender? In the aggregate, and across time, it appears to be Asians (caveat at the end).
/n Specifically, controlling for a host of demographic variables and a meaure of verbal reasoning (which is typically negatively correlated with giving a 'genetic' response), Asians (OR=3.19; p < 0.001) are over 3x more likely to attribute racial inequality to genetic diffs.
/n Now, given the typically small Asian N (asian respondents were especially few in the early waves of the GSS), the extent that this tendency generalizesand remains the case today is somewhat uncertain. That said, the pattern is generally consistent across time; and, at the..
/n ..aggregate level, is statistically significant. Anyways, I've never seen this pattern reported anywhere, so thought I'd share!
/n The extent that such responses are related to low out-group warmth isn't clear. The ANES, however, does reveal that Asians generally rate blacks less warmly than Hispanics and Whites (differences that are significant in the most recent survey year [2016])
