Low-end disruption theory applied to careers: Start mainstream then go deep

Eg Buzzfeed starts as cat videos, moves into long-form journalism

Pomp (crypto announcements -->deep dive podcasts)
Lil Dicky (Ex Boyfriend --> Russel Westbrook On A Farm)
Tim Ferriss (4HWW --> Podcast)
The other approach is to go top-down.

@tylercowen spent 20+ yrs specializing as a generalist, then turned up content engine

@eladgil first built expertise, relationships, + track record, then did the same

That’s a more durable path, altho it takes longer + not for everyone.
@tylercowen @eladgil Why more durable?

Likely means there are “real skills”.

But also it’s easier to earn the respect of mainstream once you’ve earned the respect of gatekeepers.

Harder to do the other way around, altho it happens.

Mainstream changes their minds easily. Gatekeepers don’t.
