1/ When I was younger I held a press conference at the dinner table and announced that I would make the NBA.

Upon hearing this news,, My parents asked “did you mean MBA”?

When I said no they calmly suggested that I evaluate a plan B. “Just incase” my dad added gently.
2/ They were worried about my future. An NBA salary should be sufficient, I assured them.

“It’s not that hard. You see, 1 hour passing, 1 hour dribbling—it’s all in this book.” I pointed to a kid’s book filled w/ pictures of Alonzo Mourning + John Stockton in short shorts.
3/ 10 yrs later, Bill Gates said it's ideal if your career picks up where your childhood left off.

I spent my childhood doing shooting drills, watching NBA games, & NBA stats.

….How am I going to use that?

Here are some lessons learned from playing basketball - add your own!
4/ Lesson Learned#1: Rescripting.

In response to my Q Tyler Cowen said— what if I told you that instead of memorizing Detlef Schrempf’s stats, you spent your childhood evaluating talent + strategy, + that would help you become a VC today.

Me: That’d be very convenient!
5/ That’s the power of rescripting,+ that’s what I’m trying to help you do today: tell yourself a story that your childhood wasn’t a waste of time/resources—in fact watching TV for hours a day gave you the mental strength you needed to be exactly what you’re doing professionally.
6/ Lesson #2: Pick something where you have an unfair advantage.

I picked something where I had unfair *disadvantage*.

The NBA is rigged. If you are 7 ft you have an insanely high % of making the NBA.

If you're 5’9, Israeli/Colombian ur odds are asymptotically approaching 0.
7/ How do you find out your unfair advantage? Ask what is easy for you to do but hard for others. Double Down on that thing.

Ask people what's hard for you to do that's easy for others. (Me: Jump high). Run away from that thing (if you can).
8/ Lesson # 3 Suffering

Being a Knicks fan:

There is suffering everywhere, & you should not avoid it. Let it hit you and flit w/ the wind. When Steve Francis or T-Mac join your team, do not become attached. They will be shells of themselves, + Knicks will lose.

So it goes.
9/ “Ball don’t lie” is the basketball equivalent of the just-world fallacy.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just-worl…

if you play basketball you know this: the ball always lies.
