@JustSikko @CowboyCentaur The perfect example happenened a few sessions ago: characters were sent to investigate a murder by a faction they belong to. They rolled up on the active crime scene. 1/x
@JustSikko @CowboyCentaur Instead of the typical question, “do I know any of the Watch who are here?” One of my players says, “I see a city watchman I know. Name is Burke.” I ask, “how do you know him?” The character is a bit of a troublemaker, so:”He’s busted me a few times. You know, petty stuff.” 2/x
@JustSikko @CowboyCentaur Perfect. Instead of me having to create this NPC, my player has done it, created a connection that’s meaningful to him, & given me sone story. I set a DC of 14 - Burke knows Merf as a troublemaker, but not dangerous. Getting his help will be challenging, but not impossible. 3/x
@JustSikko @CowboyCentaur When Merf approaches Burke to try to get the lay of the land, he makes a CHA roll to see Burke’s initial response to his presence, & the scene plays out like normal. 4/x
@JustSikko @CowboyCentaur In that particular adventure, the Bard created that officer, the Rogue a fence, the Cleric the head of an orphanage, & the Ranger a drug dealer. All have become part of the campaign. The players remember them. They become part of the fabric of the world. 5/x
@JustSikko @CowboyCentaur The initial encounters haven’t always gone well, if rolls go bad. But, If they’d not made these NPCs, I’d have had to make something similar to move the story, but the players might not be as invested in them. Now our world is filling w characters the players are invested in. 6/6
@JustSikko @CowboyCentaur Does that help illustrate?
