So guys, we had a Christmas Eve adventure. My daughter's boyfriend was coming up from London - he had to work late (he's a butcher) but he bought a ticket on the Last Train from King's X on the Trainline....
He did this well in advance - train due to leave at 7pm on the Boxing Day and into Waverley for about 11.30pm and we plan a midnight feast here to welcome him in. Huge cheeseboard, chocolates and some Magnum liqueur. Lovely....
He gets to Kings X in good time but, guys, No Train. He is told by staff that the last train to Scotland left ages ago and there is no 7pm train to Edinburgh. He panics (obviously). The station is very quiet - hardly any trains ....
Poor kid. There is, however, a last train to Newcastle just about to leave. He phones us. 'Get on it,' we say. 'We'll come to get you....'
So he does. There's almost no staff so he ends up helping some old lady to get on with her heavy baggage cos he's sweet like that. We try to get an uber (like £300) and check all the trains and buses, but by the time he gets to Newcastle there's nothing running....
So fuckit, we get in the car .... the moon was full, the A1 was practically empty, we played word games and had a laugh all the way down, picked him up and played word games and had a laugh all the way back (5hrs)
Honestly, it was the most beautiful, fun evening in ages. Tears of laughter running down my face (I was driving cos I was the one who hadn't been drinking) when we got back to Edinburgh there was frost on the ground and it was magical.
Also we all slept in on Xmas morning till after 10. So we're thinking hairy Xmas Eve drives might become a thing for us. Tho hopefully not cos the trainline made up an imaginary train next time. (refunding of tix due, obv)
Way better than a Christmas carol service (we did some singing in the car, tho they wouldn't have thanked us in church cos the lyrics were pretty blue.) And that's my Xmas Eve adventure. Thank you for listening. /ends
