Anybody know what the wild electric blue light show is over NYC skies right now?
(Consensus seems to be a power station in Queens? Maybe Astoria?)
(Was like this in a normally pitch-black sky, for a few minutes.)
Better view from a friend on the UES. This is what the colors looked like, mostly.
Yep, was a ConEd transformer explosion in Queens. Reminds me of this similar one in our neighborhood during Sandy.
Seems like it’s handled. Emergency radio streams have good info. Hoping everybody is okay; would expect minimal human impact but probably lots of repair work to do.
My favorite part was this deeply unsettling rapid shifting of colors from browns to blues; later there was a nice purple and also I thought maybe it was a nightmarish end of civilization.
LGA is shut down, and planes are being diverted & many can’t deplane; at least one flight that was landing had to do a go-around (sucks! always stressful!), so keep all the crew & passengers of those flights and the airport in your thoughts. Will be a really long night.
And LGA is back up and running already. Say what you want, but nobody is better in a crisis than NYC.
(Runways are running. LGA is still a mess, and folks are still stuck. But still, kudos to everybody putting in the work.)
