We saw Ralph Breaks the Internet, after really enjoying the first one, and while the movie was fine, it left me with a lingering feeling that it’s really disturbing how all these giant tech companies are just part of pop culture for kids, just like Disney princesses are.
The biggest takeaway for me was that, for better or worse, I still see so many of the major tech companies as manifestations of their founders, in contrast to a cartoon entity where these are just entities that have always existed. How do 5-year-olds form an opinion about Amazon?
(There’s also a plot point about the algorithms that recommend videos online, and knowing all the disturbing recommendations that happen to kids on YouTube adds a dimension to the story that I don’t think the writers necessarily intended.)
