Virginia's Air Board wasn't given page 1 of #environmentaljustice screening reports for proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline industrial site before their Dec. meeting. This is important b/c p.1 shows combined effects of env. burdens & pop. vulnerability. 1/7 washingtonpost.com/local/virginia…
Combined effects are shown as "EJ Indexes," developed by @EPA to put co-located environmental & demographic data in geographic context. Here, missing pages show communities within 1, 2, & 5 mi of site are among Virginia's most vulnerable (top 1/3 to 1/10 depending on Index). 2/7
Air Board members only received second page of the report (I confirmed with @VirginiaDEQ), which shows environmental & demographic results separately, not in combination. Viewing results separately leaves out an important part of the #ACPipeline #EnvironmentalJustice story. 3/
The @EPA describes EJ Indexes - only shown on page 1 of the report - as tools to identify communities with “high combinations of environmental burdens and vulnerable populations." 4/ epa.gov/ejscreen/frequ…
I re-ran the reports using EPA's online tool, EJSCREEN, and am posting the full reports (including page 1) here for general reference. EJSCREEN has limitations, but omitting key sections of the report makes little sense. 5/ scribd.com/document/39646…
.@VirginiaDEQ is accepting public comments until Jan 4 related to "questions and concerns on demographics and site suitability for the proposed air compressor (sic) station." (Note: it's a gas compressor - not an "air compressor" - station.) 6/
Feel free to review the incomplete EJSCREEN report and other Atlantic Coast Pipeline documents on the @VirginiaDEQ website and submit comments by Jan. 4. Website has instructions for commenting. End.
