The number of articles is only half the measurement of wiki activity in a language.

Stats on language wise readership and editing activity in the next few tweets.

Of the 16 bill wiki views last month, only 3 languages had over 1B hits:

English 7.5B
Japanese 1B
Spanish 1B

1/n
The other major languages, articles of which were viewed more than 100M times last month:

French 751M
Chinese 394M
Portuguese 345M
Polish 272M
Arabic 198M
Persian 143M

No indic language has more than 100 mill views, and only two had more than 10 mill

Hindi 56M
Bangla 15M

2/n
Next to Hindi and Bangla, here is the # of times the other Indic language wiki articles were viewed last month:

Marathi 8M
Tamil 8M
Telugu 4M
Kannada 3M
Urdu 2.9M
Gujarati 1.4M
Punjabi 0.7M
Bhojpuri 0.7M
Sanskrit 0.4M

Bhojpuri readership is kind of a surprise to me.

One quick insert: German also has a very popular readership with 970 million monthly views.

Coming back to India, India is the fifth largest reader of wiki articles.

USA 3.2 b (21%)
Japan 1.1 b (7.2%)
Germany 0.9 b (6.1%)
UK 0.74 b (5%)
India 0.73 b (5%)

France 0.57b
Russia 0.54b
Italy 0.53b
Canada 0.38b
Brazil 0.2b

5/n
Now, important point to note, that India is the **only** country in the 10 biggest consumers above which reads more English articles than those in the native languages.

Whipping 86% of views from India are for English articles, followed by:

Hindi 7.6%
Marathi 1%
Tamil 0.7%

6/n
As a matter of fact, India readership contributes significantly to English article views.

The last month English views on Wiki:

USA 2.9 b
UK 752 m
India 660 m

Case of Urdu is strange. With so many articles (more articles than Hindi), it has a tiny readership.

Of the 2.9 million total views,
Pakistan 1.02m
USA 0.37m
India 0.32m
UK 0.22m

Urdu also has a very small editing/upkeep activity for the large article base it has.

8/n
Despite being a major Internet user base, Wikipedia hits from China is a very small number.

For a perspective, last month:

India 734 m
China 196 m

This is because like other western SM platform, China tightly controls Wiki too. Wiki has been blocked several times in past

9/n
As a result, wiki has been disproportionately responsive to Chinese government and sensitive to its concerns.
