Hello! It’s the last day of 2018, so I figured it was about time for my #ADYearinReview - buckle up folks, this is going to be an epic one.
I want to start with my favourite #AudioDrama episodes of the year - because 2018 has been an incredible time for the development of drama podcasts as an art form, and there have some phenomenal examples of the medium this year #ADYearinReview
My favourite episode of any #AudioDrama this year was s3e6 of @Archive81, ‘Exist in the place you are currently occupying’ - this was Gulliver’s Travels meets Lovecraft meets Goethe meets Firefly and I’ve listened to it repeatedly. It’s my go-to recommendation #ADYearinReview
In a very close second was episode 50 of @brightpodcast - Rose. This musical episode made me weep, and was a lingering and beautiful swan song in a show that changed my life. Of course it makes my #ADYearinReview
I have to mention episode 68 of @KingFallsAM - because the gang made an exceptionally brave move that I could not have anticipated, and I strongly believe that it grew the emotional heart of the show tenfold. #ADYearinReview
How can I not talk about @WeFixSpaceJunk if I'm talking about audio drama in 2018? Apart from the mind-boggling achievement of producing 2 seasons, a mini series and a christmas special in less than 12 months, WFSJ had made some phenomenal episodes. (1/2) #ADYearinReview
My favourite episodes of @WeFixSpaceJunk this year were probably their mini episode for @PodMonth - 'Driving Lessons' and episode 5 of season 2, 'A Cure for Bindweed' - which made me weep on the tube #ADYearinReview
I also loved seeing @kaneandfeels really hit their stride in 2018 - my favourite episode this year was episode 4, 'Protected by Guardians', but I also have a big old soft spot for their @PodMonth mini episode, 'Carrying off a Changeling' #ADYearinReview
If I'm going to round up #AudioDrama podcasts this year - then I also really want to talk about the shows that just straight up made me feel good. These were shows that warmed my heart, brightened my day, made me laugh, made me think, and kept me hoping #ADYearinReview
I fell head over heels in love with @StarTripperHQ this year - it's still my go to if I need to be calm, happy, or remember what it is that I love so deeply and so dearly about the universe. I wouldn't make this list without it #ADYearinReview
As a bi woman who lived in Australia, I can't say how deeply touched I was when I found @LoveLuckPodcast - defiantly hopeful and full of more love than I know what to do with, I just can't listen to this podcast and feel alone. It reminds me that I'm not #ADYearinReview
I never thought you could bottle the feeling of Autumn into a podcast - not until I listened to @martletradio, and it gave me the sound of home and nostalgia and small towns and late night daydreams. And that's why it's in my #ADYearinReview
I so rarely get to enjoy media that's just fun and silly and also beautiful and emotional and warm - but @HereBDragonsPod was that for me. I think the ghost whale is still one of the most incredible visuals I've experienced in audio drama #ADYearinReview
If I wanted a show that was guaranteed to make me laugh, the end of 2018 and @thehannahrose put me on to @RoyalWinthorpe - as a historian and a nerd, I have to say the joy I get from this show is absurd. Lots of red faced stifling of giggles in public places #ADYearinReview
We talk a lot about shows that transport you - but @exoplanetarypod is one that does so more effectively for me than almost anything else. I know that whenever I listen to this show I'll go somewhere else for a while, and that's exactly what I need #ADYearinReview
I have to say how much I loved @ianchillag - I can't think of a single piece of media that so wholly and so immediately consumed my attention, and brought me into a world so strange, so warm, so thought provoking and so full of joy #ADYearinReview
Finally, in terms of shows that just brought me to a place that made me happy, I want to mention @middle_below - I can't wait for their live show in Glasgow on 16 January, this show inevitably took me to a different world that was spooky and funny and gripping #ADYearinReview
It wouldn't be a thread about #AudioDrama if I didn't mention shows I binged - you know the type, podcasts where you keep walking in circles round the block or round the supermarket, shows that makes you miss your stop, because you just can't pause halfway through #ADYearinReview
At the top of my list for shows that just blew me away this year is season 3 of @withinthewires - it's one of my all time favourite podcasts, and every series is somehow more innovative, more emotive, more expansive and more complex than the last. #ADYearinReview
At the end of the year, I became slightly obsessed with @inkphemeral's @JanusDescending - which was everything I needed in a podcast and more. I loved the way it played with its own form, and every aspect from the writing to the acting was out of this world #ADYearinReview
I started listening to @palimpsestpod in 2017, but I want to include it here because it was essentially the soundtrack of my January, and will forever be associated with late night buses and frosty evenings in London. It's breathtaking #ADYearinReview
FInally, one of my all time favourite shows of 2018 was @KalilaStormfire - I think @lisettewalking is one of audio drama's new leading lights - I loved this show, I loved the story, I loved the world, the production and the music. I can't wait for its season two #ADYearinReview
There were two really big audio dramas that I loved this year - and it was great to see bigger names actively engaging with the existing audio drama sphere. I've mentioned @ianchillag - but I also want to highlight @TheShadowsCBC and @itsthewolverine podcast #ADYearinReview
There were also several podcasts that came back for new seasons this year that were just brilliant - including @eos_10, @limetownstories, @marsfallpod, @StarshipIris and @TBCSPodcast - all of which have maintained everything I loved about them in the first place #ADYearinReview
I can't wait for new seasons of @palimpsestpod and @Victoriocity in the coming year - and again @KalilaStormfire (currently fundraising now, check out their @Indiegogo ! indiegogo.com/projects/kalil… ) #ADYearinReview
