Hopefully 2019 will be better! One thought on tweet threads before I close out the year. Occasionally I get "this should be in a blog" complaints. But these tweets have reached an audience of millions of impressions. It's a very effective medium IMO!

Rare evening technical thread: about distributed systems, exponential backoff, and the tragedy of the commons problem.
Let's say you're running some kind of service that clients call, and it has an "availability event" ... which is, you know, PR speak for "outage". Anyway, so you have this event and you fix the problem, but that doesn't always mean that you recover right away.
Often your clients will have started to retry their requests. Clients build up over over time, more and more of them. You can easily get into a situation where you now have way more requests than you ever ordinarily would. And this just as you are trying to recover. Uggh.

Mini-Thread: We've just launched TLS/SSL support for AWS Network Load Balancers. You can now use NLB to terminate TLS/SSL directly and still get the great performance, scalability, and insane magic of network transparency! See @jeffbarr's post at aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/new-…
Quick reminder: NLB is our "Layer 4" load balancing offering. It's integrated directly into the Software Defined Networking fabric of Amazon VPC, which means it can scale to terabits of traffic, millions of new connections per second, hundreds of millions of active connections.
It also means that NLB is transparent. When you put targets behind an NLB, those targets still see the original source IP/port of the client. That means no need to use X-Forwarded-For, or Proxy Protocol, or to reconfigure your logging or on-host security rules.

I think of this speech often. In many ways it was Eisenhower repeating himself, his "Chance for Peace" speech came in 1953, 8 years before this. Amazing and consistent bookends.

The BBC is running a 'fake news week'. To mark the occasion, I thought I'd do a thread. 'Fake news' is a very unhelpful term, which describes at least three different problems, which have three different solutions. #Thread
There is monetised fabrication. People knowingly pumping out rubbish ('The Pope supports Trump') because it's a way of making money through Facebook / Google's ad-revenue model. My colleague @carljackmiller covered it brilliantly here for @BBCClick bbc.co.uk/news/technolog…
This is driven in part by programmatic advertising: ad-tech follow USERS around, and advertise on sites they visit, irrespective of how truthful it is. This is where tech solutions CAN work - ie de-rank / de-monetise etc. Some evidence that's working too. engadget.com/2018/09/14/fac…

1: Once upon a time in the late 90s, there were common websites, basic cable and magazines that put out various hotlines you could call in a crisis. If not, there were search engines where you could find the numbers to places like BoysTown and the Suicide Prevention Hotline etc.
2: My parents were SUPER controlling. So much so, that we felt the control in every little way, and suspected other means of control that we did not verify until we had all moved out.

2. A System works organically. If you don't understand what creates a dysfunction to a System, you will be addressing the symptoms instead of the fundamentals.
3. Education falls within the Concurrent List of our Constitution. That is, the Federal, State, and Local Governments have the Constitutional empowerment to embark on programmes.

Question: Why did the FBI announce the reopening of Hillary’s email probe and issue its FIRST search warrant when her emails were discovered on Weiner’s laptop?
First, the fact that the FBI conducted an “investigation” involving computer servers, dozens of cell phones (smashed, SIM cards removed), and contradictory witness testimony for 12 months without getting a search warrant already screams “the fix was in”
The question is – if they went a full year with people smashing cell phones, bleaching hard drives, and removing SIM Cards without getting a search warrant, why would they get one 8 days before the election? Suspicious.
