Kind of embarrassing to realize that all this time that I’ve been frustrated with & consequently dismissive of HOAS it’s been because I was doing it wrong. @conal was really onto something!
Doing it wrong:

- Using it for tasks which it isn’t suited for.
- Using it for tasks which it *is* suited for, but getting the surrounding details wrong.

On the plus side, I’m happy with how HOAS is working for path’s types/values now!
Someday perhaps I’ll figure out how I’ve been doing @fancytypes’ Boxes Go Bananas work wrong, too 😅

@a_cowley So to be clear, I haven’t benchmarked this, but I can’t imagine it’s great if you’re calling/replacing those higher-order functions a lot. Thunks aren’t free. But that’s going to be the case with anything where you’re traversing trees/replacing subtrees repeatedly, too.
@a_cowley And some things, like repeated substitutions (inlining!) of globals, can be performed by composing onto the function in O(1), deferring the actual *work* just like with difference lists.
@a_cowley I also haven’t yet done any sort of optimization passes or similar yet; doing that kind of graph traversal/transformation may be more difficult than e.g. unification has been. But I’m hopeful!

@a_cowley Pattern matching on the argument to the higher-order function is definitely a mistake, which PHOAS resolves by making it impossible. Learned that one the hard way!
@a_cowley Additionally, the basic treatment of it as e.g.:

data Expr = App Expr Expr | Lam (Expr -> Expr)

doesn’t really allow for free variables, which you often want—e.g. distinguishing locals, represented by variables in the metalanguage, from globals, represented as a constructor.
@a_cowley That can also be used to allow you to “quote” the thing back to a first-order representation, for equality tests, pretty-printing, etc. But I tend to use strings for var names in my term syntax, and then how do you know you’re not going to be clobbering other names?

Mentoring is challenging. You have to:

- be mindful of the power gradient between yourself and your mentee;
- be mindful of your mentee’s current level of understanding;
- provide context around *why*, and not just *what* things are done;
- come up with explanations on the fly;
- let your mentee make mistakes so they can learn to diagnose & recover from them;
- give them challenges that are *just* outside their current reach;
- make a psychologically safe environment for them to be wrong;
- gently explore their decisions & understanding via questions;
- explain how you think about the thing they’re trying to do;
- therefore, be self-aware w.r.t. your own processes;
- be mindful that not all mentees are the same;
- be mindful that everyone has different circumstances;
- be mindful that everyone has off days;

Kind of wonder if Democrats are onto something with this ignore Trump, pivot to what they want to talk about instead thing. He always looks smaller when he isn’t getting a reaction.
. @danpfeiffer suggested to me earlier that the 2020 nominee consider borrowing from Mitch McConnell’s playbook and just refuse to comment on Trump tweets whenever possible. That’s sort of how they approached the midterms, obviously harder to do in a 1 on 1 race.

The Evidence Obtained Outside Cameras will not show any evidence of ‘tempering’ but other than license plates of dozens of diplomatic cars (Many with tinted windows-large trunks) with related time stamp, drivers Info, model/year: Nothing.
#Turkish Intel-Investigative Bodies also have the list of all Diplomatic & Private Saudi & “other significant’ Planes in #Turkey for the period of ‘interest.’ Many of the Target airports have their own security cameras & related evidence.

I fell hard for Harlan Ellison stories as a teenager. Not an uncommon thing. I scoured my high school library for anything with his name on it, then hunted places like Uncle Hugo's. If you wanted Ellison you had to learn a new love for used copies, yellowing pages, torn covers.
His publication history was as patchwork and chimerical as his reputation. He was world-famous, he was obscure. He was ubiquitous, he was a distant fluttering heat mirage. He was an angel, he was a sentient hemorrhoid. He was impossible to work with, he was the Pro of Pros.
When I was hunting his stuff, in the hazy pre-eBay paleolithic, it seemed like God's own shotgun blasted his work out to the bookstores of the world at random intervals, to no discernible ballistic pattern.
