Given my follow-on tweet has been misinterpreted 100 different ways I deleted it. My point is I don’t want to leave my kids a climate disaster or an economic one. This isn’t either/or. Society can choose to be responsible stewards of the planet AND be fiscally responsible.
Most climate policy options have no federal deficit impact: carbon tax, cap and trade, renewable standards, increased energy efficiency standards, etc. We can choose to be responsible stewards of the environment AND responsible stewards of the economy.

1/ A short rant on the deficit & Modern Monetary Theory. MMT states that since the US can print as much $ as it wants, it can never go bankrupt and deficits are generally not important. Thus, the US should run significant deficits to maximize productive capacity. All good so far.
2/ The problem is that the economic and political realities of how government works means that this policy will end badly. Even the leading proponent of MMT, Stephanie Kelton, believes the policy can be overdone.

3/ Intuitively, it must. Otherwise, we should cut taxes to zero and double all spending. If there are no negative ramifications to the deficit, then let’s go. But even Bernie Sanders, whom Kelton worked for, has a section on his website “How Bernie pays for his proposals.”

A side project we @LJA_Foundation have worked on is to bring greater transparency, oversight, & accountability to organ donation system. The orgs that procure organs have geographic monopolies of highly varying quality. Frankly, we think some are poorly managed & could do better.
The report we commissioned was picked up by WaPo this week in a 3 part series. After reading it, @ToddYoungIN pledged to introduce legislation to expand oversight of the industry: “nation’s organ donation system operat(es) in darkness, it’s time to get a look behind the curtain”

Illinois pensions have entered the death spiral, as they fall further behind in FY 18 even with strong investment returns. The funds have $223 bln of liabilities growing at assumed rate of 7% a year ($15 bln). But with assets of only $90 bln, must earn 17% just to stay even.
For Illinois' FY '18 which ended in June, the S&P rose 14.2% including dividends. The 5 largest pension funds in Illinois earned 6.9-8.3%. Even after a larger cash contribution from the state, the funds fell $4 bln further behind. What happens in a year when the market is down??

Jet streams are a fascinating piece of the climate science puzzle that most people have never considered. Learning about this one simple thing for 5 min explains SO MUCH.

When everyone knows this we will all accomplish more.

THREAD
1. First point:

"Weather" (clouds, storms, rain ect.) is pushed around by wind.

There are some major, reliable, high altitude winds like the jet steams that push weather around the Earth in predictable patterns.
2. Here's how jet streams work:
The sun warms the air around the equator all year. The warm air then moves up and towards the poles. The air coming off the poles towards the equator is freezing cold. Where the warm air and cold air collide the jet stream is formed.

The link went to an ActBlue form, which positioned donating to Beto as a way to get back at Cruz.

A note at the bottom of the page states that donations would be split evenly.

That's easy to miss, especially for ActBlue Express users who can donate with 1 click. 2
Users could select an amount with 1 tap and donate, missing the fact that by default, the form would split their donation between Avenatti's Fight PAC and Beto's campaign 50/50.

"Make this a monthly recurring donation" was checked by default with Nov. 6th 3 weeks away. 3

Today the IPCC released its Special Report on the implications of a global temperature increase of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, and whether it is physically possible & feasible to achieve this climate stabilisation. The Summary for Policymakers: report.ipcc.ch/sr15/pdf/sr15_…
There are some key messages in the report. Bottom line: there is a substantial reduction in risks when stabilising at 1.5°C compared to 2°C; it is physically possible to achieve this lower stabilisation, but extremely challenging in infrastructure terms.
Human activities are estimated to have caused approximately 1.0°C of global warming above pre-industrial levels, with a likely range of 0.8°C to 1.2°C. Global warming is likely to reach 1.5°C between 2030 and 2052 if it continues to increase at the current rate.
