Back in the 1970s, the Polish-born Zbigniew Brzezinski suggests to President Jimmy Carter to send aid to Muslim "holy warriors" (mujahideen) in Afghanistan, so as to embroil the USSR in their own Vietnam.
The official line was that US aided the "brave anti-Communist freedom fighters" only AFTER the USSR sent troops into Afghanistan in December 1979, of course.

Then Osama Bin Laden's peace-and-freedom-loving followers began bombing US embassies, ships and buildings, so in 2001 President George W. Bush sent US troops to Afghanistan to find him.
They never did find him in Afghanistan: Bin Laden was reportedly killed by SEAL Team Six at a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in 2011. But US troops stayed in Afghanistan, for some reason.
TL;DR: Between jihadist violence and US interventions, countless thousands of people have died, and dozens of countries have been wrecked over the past 40 years. All because an ethnic Pole sought to use the US and Muslim holy war as tools of his personal jihad against Russia.
