The idea that we shouldn't have a second referendum because we'll be divided is very strange indeed. We already are divided. It already happened. You cannot wish it away. It is tantamount to just giving up the fight.
What matters is whether the winners are prepared to reach out to the other side and address their grievances. After two years it is clear Brexiters cannot do that. They won't even do it with their own side.
May had two years, two years in which at least half the Remainers I knew would have backed Brexit if they'd been given anything to work with. They were not.
Do it's up to Remainers to do it. To stop the self-harm by democratic means. And then try to offer a national story, in rhetoric and policy, which can unite people.
But for heaven's sake don't tell them to stop fighting because of something that's already happening. It's like telling a man in a storm not to go inside because the storm will continue.
