Yesterday marked the 84th anniversary of #Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, when Germans began a Nazi pogrom — burning synagogues, destroying shops, and murdering Jews.

Today, we remember that our safety lies in solidarity with each other.

nytimes.com/2022/11/10/wor…
Kristallnacht is often thought of as the beginning of the Holocaust, a moment of state-sanctioned extreme violence leading to systematic genocide.

But the attacks on Jews began with a decade of dehumanization: restrictions on travel, bans from public venues, public hate speech.
Today, as antisemitism, anti-Black racism, and white nationalism persist in our country and in the halls of power, we remember Kristallnacht.

We commit to rejecting antisemitism and bigotry in all forms.

We must keeping fighting for all of us to be free, safe, and thriving.

Thread - #Kristallnacht On 9/10th November in 1938, nationwide pogroms resulted in the murder of perhaps hundreds of Jews in Germany, by Nazi goons. Countless others were injured. Nearly 300 synagogues were destroyed. Over 7000 Jewish shops & other property were looted.
Around 30 000 male Jews were arrested & put in concentration camps. Nazi terror was "revenge" for the killing of an official at the German Embassy in Paris, by a a young Polish Jew, Herschel Grynszpan. His parents were among many expelled from Germany & refused entry to Poland
Nazi myths of a world wide Jewish conspiracy fed into Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass). Legislation after Kristallnacht forced Jews out of the economy & onto the fringes of society. Nearly 80 000 Jews were driven to leave Germany in 1939, compared to about 40 000 in 1938.

Of #Kristallnacht and #MIGRATION: a🧵
My dad asked to be buried with his passport.
This was the one wish he expressed after his cancer diagnosis in May. We honored it when we buried him at the end of September.
Passport in his inner jacket pocket.
Strange, no?
Let me explain.
In the summer of 1938, my grandparents took my dad & aunt from their home in Frankfurt to Switzerland on vacation.
That should have been impossible. Jews had been issued passports stamped with a big red “J” (for “Jude,” or “Jew”). They couldn’t just waltz out of the country.
Due to some administrative snafu, my grandparents’ passports hadn’t gotten the “J” stamp yet. So they could travel to Switzerland unimpeded. They spent a few weeks vacationing in the gorgeous alpine village of @Adelboden_ch.

82 years ago #OnThisDay the #Kristallnacht pogrom took place. Jewish homes, businesses and synagogues were attacked across Germany and Austria and in areas of the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia recently occupied by German troops throughout the night of the 9-10 November.
Hundreds of synagogues and Jewish institutions were attacked and destroyed. SA and Hitler Youth members shattered the shop windows of an estimated 7,500 Jewish-owned commercial establishments and looted them. Cemeteries became a particular object of desecration in many regions.
The pogrom was especially destructive in Berlin and Vienna, the two largest Jewish communities in these areas.

#OnThisDay (1938), we mark 82 years since #Kristallnacht, when Nazis (and their enablers) across Germany & Austria razed synagogues, smashed windows and murdered almost 100 Jews in a violent pogrom - known as ’Night of Broken Glass'.

My #THREAD with some thoughts & lessons:
1. Kristallnacht, was a murderous example of the capacity of humans to escalate from harassment, indifference, demonization and singling out of Jews - to violence.

First by words and through dehumanization, and then through the Nazi infrastructure of death.
2. In the weeks that followed #Kristallnacht, approximately 30,000 Jews were transported to concentration camps — a sorrow foreshadowing of the further evil that would soon ensue.

In short: @UPPolice, PAC, RAF are the "rioters" - दंगाई - here, targeting & trashing Muslim homes (see video). Will try & post videos/pics as Internet allows
RAF was also involved in this destruction of Muslim homes singled out for being prosperous. One left his blue cap behind. Police, PAC, RAF doing this said, "Muslims will be thrown out of India, don't damage the floor or walls, after all, all this will one day belong to us"
Look at these images. Not a single plate or cup or shelf has been left whole. Each & every thing has been broken, under pretext of a "flag march" by PAC, RAF, police. In this home, there was only a woman with 3 children at night when the forces stormed in & trashed it.

9-10 November 1938 | #Kristallnacht – a pogrom against the Jews throughout Nazi Germany. Almost 100 killed, 30,000 men arrested, over 1,000 synagogues burnt, over 7,000 Jewish businesses destroyed or damaged: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kristalln…
The name Kristallnacht ("Crystal Night") comes from the shards of broken glass that littered the streets after the windows of Jewish-owned stores, buildings and synagogues were smashed.
In an article on the evening of 11 November, Joseph Goebbels ascribed the events to the "healthy instincts" of the German people: "The German people are anti-Semitic. It has no desire to have its rights restricted or to be provoked in the future by parasites of the Jewish race."

I had to read this article twice to try to understand Netanyahu's message here.
Netanyahu is letting his hatred of Palestinians cloud his knowledge of history. The alleged meeting with the Mufti didn't take place until November 1941.
1/ haaretz.com/amp/israel-new…
Dachau concentration camp opened in 1933.
By 1935 there were already more than 100k Jews in concentration camps at Dachau, Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Flossenberg and Ebensee.
This assertion by Netanyahu defies all well-established and documented Holocaust history.
2/
Netanyahu is effectively absolving Hitler---the 2nd worst mass murderer in recorded history after Stalin--of the extermination of 6 million Jews & 10 million other "undesirables" from the disabled to gays. But The Final Solution was established specifcally to EXTERMINATE Jews.

#kristallnacht80 The first film about the Holocaust was directed by my great-uncle Adolf Minkin. "Professor Mamlock" (1938) ran in the USA where it opened two days before the #Kristallnacht. Its history is remarkable.
Made in Russia, "Professor Mamlock" ran with huge success in the USSR until it was banned for a period between August 1939 and through June 23, 1941 because Stalin signed a pact with Hitler. Molotov--Ribbentrop pact. (Molotov, Ribbentrop, Hitler 👇)

My dad’s first memory is hiding under a table 80 years ago tonight, when Nazis took his dad to Dachau on #Kristallnacht.
His parents, my Omi and Opi, always considered themselves more German than Jewish, so they didn’t think they’d get swept up in the madness.
Opi was taken to city hall with other Jews and lined up against a wall. He thought he was going to be shot.

Tonight we commemorate the 80th anniversary of #Kristallnacht, the “night of broken glass”.
That night, 9 November 1938, Nazi fury broke out against Jews throughout Germany and Austria — 92 were killed; 30,000 were seized and sent to concentration camps; 7,500 Jewish businesses were set on fire and destroyed.

It was the most ominous sign of what was to come.
But it had another dimension no less terrifying: 267 synagogues were burnt. Thousands of Torah scrolls, Judaism’s most sacred objects, were desecrated and thrown into the flames. Suddenly it became clear that the Nazis were intent not only on killing Jews.

THREAD: My career has been spent studying Christianity and the rise of Nazism, specifically, the massive moral failure of a religion in the face of political nihilism to recognize it and fight back. In early 30's Hitler promised Germany he would take care of the communists /1
and other "degenerates" who threatened Christian civilization. He made the religious appeal knowing Germans would instinctively protect a religion that legitimated and justified anti-Semitism and cultural power, even though he had no real commitment to Christianity. /2
Millions embraced this message, even though it was cloaked in code about who the "enemy" really was. After gaining political power by subverting the law and creating a crisis with the Reichstag fire, Hitler passed legislation to stop dissent and /3
