Georgia has a democracy crisis. The public and leaders in all sectors must demand reform so that our elections system is truly free and fair for all citizens. Today in GA there are TWO active election contest suits that question the validity and seek a redo on 2018 elections:
1. GOP State Rep Gasaway in N GA, who would get a 2nd do-over given abnormalities and 2. the race for Lt Gov where there is a freakishly abnormal “drop off”-- 100,000 missing votes in that race. Once unusual, both contest suits see cracks in the foundation of our system.
One is an R who is fighting on his own & one is brought by progressives, they both show our 16 year old paperless, insecure voting machines & our elections system overall is so flawed that it cannot be trusted to be delivering the will of the people. This is a bipartisan outrage.
In addition, @fairfightaction filed a massive federal suit where we will prove in court that Georgians’ constitutional right to vote was violated & exposes a system of voter suppression that subverts the right to vote of people of color—nothing less than a new Jim Crow.
On top of these three pending suits AND the four previous federal suits from fall of last year that forced the state to count more votes—we had breaking news today from @GADems that @briankempGA’s so called “SAFE Commission” formed to replace our outdated machines is a ruse-
meant to shove through a new, problematic, high cost machine vendor’s product—made by a company whose chief lobbyist over the past year is the JUST ANNOUNCED Deputy Chief of Staff to soon to be Gov @BrianKempGA.
The election machine vendor outcome @BrianKempGA wants is clearly baked into the construction of his very process. This commission is a farce; it put the cart before the horse, the companies drove the process. It has prioritized vendors over voters, in this unprecedented context.
.@BrianKempGA's commission looks poised to make recs that serve his preferred company/ies, not Georgians-- rigging the system from the governor’s office (who will sign the final legislation & the multi-million dollar contracts).
Committee members & the public must demand answers from @BrianKempGA as well as a new process that ensures a secure paper ballot system is implemented; members must slow down, do their jobs, review expert testimony, outstanding litigation, the election contests & their findings.
There is still time to serve the public, not the companies. Attend tomorrow’s SAFE Commission meeting which is open to the public: 9am-12pm Jan 10 in the Coverdell Legislative Office Building, Room 606, 18 Capitol Square SW, Atlanta. #gapol #counteveryvote #canttrustkemp
